KFC brings back beloved '90s menu item, but fans say something's missing here

Kentucky Fried Chicken is bringing back a fan-favorite from the 1990s — but longtime customers may notice a few key changes.

The fast-food chain announced last week that it is bringing back the Twister for a limited time, reviving the tortilla-wrapped sandwich that developed a loyal following before disappearing from U.S. menus more than a decade ago.

Originally introduced in the late '90s, the Twister featured roast chicken, ranch dressing, bacon bits and shredded cheddar wrapped inside pita-style bread, according to reports.

But the modern-day version looks a little different, fans say.

The latest iteration of the wrap includes two crispy chicken tenders layered with lettuce and diced tomato inside a warm flour tortilla, according to a news release. It comes topped with the fried chicken chain's Pepper Mayo, with an option to swap in Zinger Sauce for added spice. Customers can also order a bacon version that includes hickory-smoked bacon strips.

Absent from the updated version is shredded cheddar cheese — a change many fans quickly pointed out online, along with other differences from the original.

"Please tell you didn't change a single thing, Colonel!" a Facebook comment read.

But some people shared that it had.

"Didn't it used to come with cheese on it? Because now it doesn't come with cheese," one social media user wrote, while another lamented, "THERE WAS NO CHEESE!"

"Not made with crispy strips so no, it's not the original Twister," one man commented on Facebook.

A representative for KFC said the company aimed to strike a balance between nostalgia and modernization.

"We certainly wanted to bring back what fans love and remember about the Twister," a spokesperson told Fox News Digital. "This return honors what made it iconic but provides a modern twist for new fans to enjoy as well."

Portion size also drew scrutiny from some commenters.

"The strips [were] half or 3rd the size as they used to be," one customer claimed, while another was nostalgic for the prices of the '90s, alleging the wrap was "half the size, twice the price of the original."

KFC, however, has said the reintroduced Twister has a "more substantial build" and is designed to serve as a full meal.

Meanwhile, many customers celebrated the wrap's return — "I'M GOING TO KFC RIGHT NOW," one Instagram user commented — despite debate about whether it lives up to the original.

"Don't EVER take this away from us again," one woman wrote in an Instagram comment.

While the limited-time offer is set to run for a month while supplies last, the company said it will listen to fan feedback. "We pay close attention to how fans respond," a spokesperson said. "The passion around the Twister has been loud and clear, and that kind of demand doesn't go unnoticed."

The Twister's return is part of an effort to deliver convenience and substance, according to the company.

"In today's market, value can't just mean price, and portability can't come at the expense of satisfaction," Melissa Cash, chief marketing officer of KFC, said in a statement. "We brought back the original Twister fans love as a wrap that stands on its own, now with even more ways to customize it, including a bacon option."

The Twister's return comes alongside the launch of KFC's new $20 "Build a Bucket," a customizable bundle that includes eight pieces of bone-in chicken or eight tenders, four sides, four biscuits and sauces.

The company said the offerings aim to provide "real value" while staying true to its roots. The additions come as fast-food chains continue to emphasize value-driven and protein-focused promotions.

Prices and participation may vary by location, according to KFC.
