Nancy Guthrie Update Today: Crucial Questions Answered
Nancy Guthrie's disappearance has transfixed the nation, journalists, and true crime sleuths. Much remains unknown about the missing 84-year-old's abduction.
Where is Nancy Guthrie? Is she still alive? Who took her? Why? Those answers are unclear. But other crucial questions have been answered. A top journalist who has been following the case has been answering some readers' questions on social media. Michael Ruiz is a true-crime journalist with Fox News Digital who has extensively covered the case. The Pima County Sheriff and the FBI answered other major questions in news conferences and interviews.
Here are some of the main questions with answers.
Do Authorities Have DNA in the Case?
Yes. According to CBS News, the Pima County Sheriff's Department "has said DNA was collected at the property that isn't from Guthrie or those in close contact with her, and that investigators were working to identify who it came from."
Although analysis is underway, "there's concern that the DNA found at the home may not yield a usable profile for comparison in databases," CBS News reported.
"The DNA that was submitted to CODIS was from the set of gloves found 2 miles away. It did not trigger a match in CODIS & did not match DNA found at the property. The DNA found at the property is being analyzed & further testing needs to be done as part of the investigation," the sheriff wrote on X.
"DNA evidence from gloves found approximately 2 miles from Nancy Guthrie's residence was submitted to CODIS & produced no matches. There is additional DNA evidence that was found at the residence that is also being analyzed."
Are Nancy Guthrie's Daughter, Annie Guthrie & Her Husband Tommaso Cioni, Suspects in the Case?

— Pima County Sheriff's Department (@PimaSheriff) February 16, 2026
No. The Pima County sheriff wrote on X that all of Guthrie's children and their spouses have been cleared. "To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, it is cruel," the sheriff wrote on February 16.
“We would be irresponsible if we didn’t talk to everyone. The Uber driver, the gardener, the pool guy,” Sheriff Chris Nanos said in an early news conference. “Everyone is still a suspect in our eyes. Does that mean we have a prime suspect? No. The family has been very cooperative. They have done everything we’ve asked of them. People can be mean out there.” However, he firmly ruled out the kids and their spouses, including Annie and Cioni, in the later statement.
Were the Photos of the Suspect From Different Days?
Unclear. The Sheriff's Department wrote that this is speculative. The Pima County Sheriff wrote that the agency is aware that the released photos show the suspect "in different stages of attire, including with and without a backpack."

But there is no time stamp associated with the images, so theories that they were taken on different days are "speculative," wrote the sheriff.

What Time Was Nancy Guthrie Abducted? Who Last Saw Her Before the Suspect Abducted Her?
Authorities released a timeline during a press conference.
- 5:32 p.m. “Nancy travels to her local family’s home for dinner and playing games with the family, just visiting.” The New York Times previously reported that this dinner was with Nancy’s daughter, Annie Guthrie and her husband, Tommaso Cioni. According to the sheriff, Nancy used an Uber driver, and authorities tracked him down and spoke with him.
- 9:48 p.m. “Nancy was dropped off at home. We know that because we have the garage door open at approximately 9:48 p.m.,” the sheriff said. The Times reported that the person who dropped Nancy “safely” off was Cioni.
- 9:50 p.m. The garage door closes. “At that time, we assume that Nancy’s home and probably going to bed,” Nanos added.
- 1:47 a.m. Sunday morning. The “doorbell camera disconnects.”
- 2:12 a.m. Software “detects a person on a camera."
- 2:28 a.m. “Nancy’s pacemaker app shows it was a disconnect from the phone.”
- 11:56 a.m. “The family checks on Nancy and discovers her missing,” the sheriff said.
- 12:03 p.m. 911 is called.
Is There a Second Suspect in the Photos Released by Authorities?
The disturbing photos of the masked, armed man outside Nancy's door have sparked endless analysis.
A woman wrote on Ruiz's comment thread, "Does anyone else think at the 39 second mark on this video they see another flashlight to the right of the screen? Second person? He clearly looks back towards the driveway when he pulled the flowers up before returning to try and cover the camera."

Was It Confirmed That Blood Was Discovered Inside Nancy Guthrie's Home?
Ruiz answered this question bluntly. "No."
However, there was blood found outside on the porch. The sheriff revealed in a news conference that authorities “rushed through the DNA and got some back. The blood on the porch…it came back to Nancy.”
Ruiz wrote, "Blood drops on the front porch and no Nancy — would be pretty alarming. Her phone, watch and purse still inside. Car in garage. Etc."

That comment came in response to a person who wrote, "The fact that they called 911 7 minutes after being in the house says they saw something inside that did not look right."
How Did Nancy Guthrie's Pacemaker Disconnect From Her Phone?
This is a detail that the sheriff included in a timeline he released in the case early on. "I want to know how the perp(s) knew how to disconnect her pacemaker from the app. If I'm a random criminal that scopes out a lone 84 year old, possibly several nights through a period of time, I'm not gonna ask if she's on a pacemaker. Wouldn't Nancy keep that to herself?" a reader asked Ruiz.

He explained, "Probably by physically moving her out of range."
Was There Forced Entry to the House?
Authorities won't say. “Someone had mentioned there was forced entry,” Sheriff Chris Nanos said in a news conference. “I have no clue where that comes from. I’m not discussing that at all, whether it’s forced entry or not. I don’t know where anybody got that information.”
Was Nancy Guthrie Taken Out of the Country, Including Over the Mexican Border?
Authorities don't know. Nanos said in a press conference that he has received no indication that the case traces to “anything over the Mexican border.” Asked whether it’s possible that Guthrie is being held outside the U.S., authorities said they haven’t ruled anything out.
Was Nancy Guthrie Kidnapped Because She Is Savannah Guthrie's Mom?
That's unclear. Nanos said there was “nothing to indicate” that motive, however.
Did the Nancy Guthrie Suspect Take the Door Camera?
It's missing. “We do not have it in our possession. We have not located it," Nanos said.
Were There Ransom Notes in the Case?
Yes. They were sent to various media outlets.
