Gunman shoots at Chicago cops leading to chase, crash in Auburn Gresham
A gunman allegedly fired shots at Chicago police officers Monday morning, sparking a chase that ended in a crash and at least one arrest in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the city's South Side.
Officers were inside two marked squad cars just after 6 a.m. in the 7500 block of South Peoria Street when the gunman, who was on foot nearby, began shooting at the officers, police said.
Over police scanner radio, an officer called in details to an OEMC dispatcher who had ordered more officers to the scene in the 7600 block of South Peoria Street. "We're on foot," he yelled. "Come on units!"
No one was shot and officers didn’t return fire, officials said.
The alleged shooter then fled into a black SUV and officers chased him until he crashed into two parked vehicles in the 7600 block of South Union Avenue, police said.
The alleged shooter tried running away but was arrested and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center for observation, officials said.
Two officers were taken to area hospitals for observation and have since been released, authorities said.
A weapon was recovered at the scene and Area 1 detectives were investigating.
