"They will be": Carrick delivers big injury update on two Man Utd stars ahead of Newcastle game
Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has provided a big update on Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United on the road.
The Red Devils continued their fine league form on Sunday. They picked up a sixth victory under Carrick with an impressive second-half performance against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes and Benjamin Sesko found the net in a 2-1 comeback win for United.
Speaking after the result, Carrick was asked to provide an update on Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire, who were substituted in the first and second halves, respectively, with possible injuries.
Shaw suffered a heavy knock from a Daniel Munoz challenge early in the first half. The Englishman looked dejected as he was replaced by Noussair Mazraoui after just 24 minutes on the clock.
Meanwhile, Maguire played 85 minutes against the south London outfit. He appeared unwell as he came off, and Carrick has now explained the reason behind the duo’s substitution.
The 44-year-old said the pair were not feeling too well and hoped that they would be better ahead of the upcoming league trip to St James’ Park to face Newcastle on Wednesday night.
Carrick said: “They just weren’t feeling too well, so, hopefully, they will be feeling better soon.”
United have had a stunning turnaround under Carrick’s guidance. They have won six games and drawn one since the former Red Devils midfielder accepted the interim role for the rest of the campaign.
The club have now jumped to third in the league standings, ahead of Aston Villa and find themselves in pole position to qualify for the Champions League with a big gap over sixth-placed Chelsea.
A top-five league finish should be sufficient to make the elite European competition next term. United are currently six points ahead of the Blues, who have a daunting schedule to the end of the season.
Meanwhile, Maguire and Shaw have been phenomenal at the back during United’s resurgence, and Carrick will hope to have both players in the starting XI for Wednesday’s match on Tyneside.
