Scott Munn reveals why Tottenham medical changes didn’t go entirely to plan: ‘Wasn’t an optimal outcome’
Former Tottenham Hotspur chief football officer Scott Munn has revealed why the Lilywhites have not managed to solve their injury problems.
When he arrived at Spurs last summer, Thomas Frank insisted that plans were in place to avoid another injury crisis at Tottenham this season.
Whatever the plan was, it did not work, as Tottenham have been the worst hit by injuries this season across Europe.
Igor Tudor has refused to divulge his thoughts on why Spurs have so many injuries, but one senior former Tottenham official has made a big revelation.
Scott Munn reveals Tottenham did not implement the findings of their medical review
Tottenham have conducted reviews of their medical department in order to get to the bottom of why they are suffering far more injuries than normal.
Scott Munn has now revealed that some parts of the findings from those reviews were not accepted by the club.
When asked about Tottenham’s injury crisis and whether that had to do with the departure of former head of medicine, Geoff Scott, the former Spurs chief football officer told Football 360: “We did a review into every department – the academy, medicine, everything… So yes, that happened.
“We wanted to come through with a number of changes and take the medical department to a level that equated to a big club in England. Unfortunately, we couldn’t make the changes we recommended – some parts were accepted, other parts weren’t. That wasn’t an optimal outcome.
“If you look at this year’s injury position, not much has changed. You need to look at it in totality, and there’s many parts to this…but yes ok, I’ll wear that accusation.”
Munn suggests his two years at Spurs were successful
The 52-year-old also reflected on his two-year stint in North London, suggesting that, on the whole, it was successful.
The Australian conceded that Tottenham’s domestic performances last season were not good enough, but pointed out that it was down to the prioritisation of the Europa League.
When asked about his time at Spurs, Munn said: “I learned a lot professionally and I made amazing friends. I didn’t know Ange or his staff previously. On the field – the key metrics were that we were fifth in the first year after finishing eighth the season before. The second year we won the club’s first trophy in 20 years and we qualified for the UEFA Champions League – on those measures you’d say we did a pretty good job in trying circumstances.
“We all understand the Premier League performance wasn’t good enough, but we had to make a decision on what outcome was better for us – a higher Premier League finish, or to put all our efforts into success in Europe, and we did that.”
