This is the Dishwasher Part You Didn't Know You Had to Clean
You’ve tried cleaning your dishwasher filter and even gave the vinegar bowl cleaning hack a try, and your glasses and dishes are still coming out cloudy. Don’t throw in the towel and start shopping for a new dishwasher or hunting for a plumber just yet. You might be able to solve the problem with just a metal clothes hanger.
The Problem
There's likely nothing wrong with your dishwasher’s core components–its pump and motor. The culprit is probably clogged spray arms. Sediment from hard water and food particles like small seeds can sometimes bypass the filter and end up lodged in the holes of the spray arms, creating low water pressure.
Without a strong flow of water, dishwasher pods may not fully dissolve, and dishes won’t be adequately rinsed, resulting in a cloudy haze or food particles left on your dishes. You can return your dishwasher back to top working condition by simply unclogging the spray arms.

Unclog the Spray Arms
All you’ll need for this simple repair is a wire coat hanger and a pair of wire cutters:
- Cut a section of wire from a wire clothes hanger using a pair of wire cutters.
- Remove the lower basket from the dishwasher, then remove the lower spray arm. Most spray arms pop off or have a plastic locking nut that you turn to release the arm.
- Poke the wire into the holes on the spray arm. Don’t be shy. Push the wire all the way into each hole and move it in a circular motion to clear it out. The goal is to break away any build-up around the holes or release food stuck inside the arm.
- If the sprayer arm is really gunked up, soak it in a bath of warm water and vinegar in your sink for a few hours.
- Rinse the arm with clean water then reinstall it in the dishwasher. Lock it into place then spin it. If it’s correctly installed the arm should spin freely.
- Repeat the cleaning process with the spray arm on the top of the dishwasher.

FAQs
How often should I clean the spray arms?
Clean the spray arms once every few months to prevent sediment and food particles from building up on them. Simply remove the arms, rinse them in the sink, then return them to the dishwasher. By cleaning them periodically, you can prevent them from getting clogged.
What if I can’t unclog the spray arms?
If one of the spray arms is hopelessly clogged, you don’t need to replace the whole dishwasher. Spray arms are one of the more affordable parts of your dishwasher. Go to your manufacturer's website and order the spray arm that matches the model number of your dishwasher.
When should I call a plumber?
Cleaning out the holes in the spray arms should restore the water pressure your dishwasher needs to clean your dishes. If the problem persists and you’ve already cleaned the dishwasher filter, it may be time to call a plumber or replace the dishwasher.
