18 States in the Path of New Winter Storm Bringing up to 8 Inches of Snow
Just a week after the Northeast experienced a blizzard that dropped over three feet of snow in some states, another winter storm is beginning to brew. Latest data from Accuweather revealed 18 states are in the path of the new storm that threatens to bring up to eight inches of snow and difficult travel conditions to most of the Eastern portion of the United States.
Portions of the Great Plains will be dealing with the winter weather on Saturday, but the storm is set to move East as temperatures start to fall.
"By Sunday, expect high temperatures in the low 40s, 30s, and even some upper 20s. Morning lows will plummet into the 20s and teens. The cold air will then settle across the East Coast by Monday as a strong Arctic high pressure takes hold," the National Weather Service said. "Bands of light snow are falling across Montana to the Dakotas this early morning. This is all north of a frontal boundary draped across from the Rockies southward into the Plains. The forecast calls for light to moderate snow accumulations of 2-5 inches for today."
18 States Facing up to 8 Inches of Snow
Snow, ice and rain are forecast to spread from the central portions of the Mississippi and Ohio valleys on Sunday to parts of the Atlantic Seaboard on Monday. A push of arctic air will help create a larger zone of snow and ice as it starts in Iowa and Missouri before making its way East through Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia.
Accuweather predicts three-to-six inches of snow for most of the region, but locally higher amounts up to eight inches are possible. With the snow and significant ice accumulations incoming, a travel warning was given.
"In areas east of the mountains in Pennsylvania, Maryland, northern Virginia, Delaware and southern New Jersey, where snow or a wintry mix becomes intermittent from midday into Monday evening, precipitation may melt on treated roads. In much of this zone, accumulations of a coating to an inch are likely, mainly on non-paved surfaces," it said.
As the storm continues to push East, a new swath of states will be under a winter storm threat from Monday night into Tuesday. Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont are all set to experience snow and ice accumulations through Wednesday.
"A key to the storm from Tuesday to Wednesday will be the Arctic high-pressure area, which will be moving off the mid-Atlantic coast, rather than holding its ground," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Matt Benz said. "Southerly breezes will allow a swift warmup so that snow and ice quickly transition to rain in most areas over the mid-Atlantic and New England from Tuesday to Wednesday."
Accuweather warned of urban flooding following the significant snowfall from last weekend's blizzard.
