Sports briefs: Marin Academy survives, advances to NorCals
The Marin Academy girls basketball team got prime-time performances from several players to pull a 54-50 road upset against No. 4 Las Lomas in the North Coast Section Division IV playoffs on Friday night in Walnut Creek.
The No. 6 Wildcats (18-12) emerged victorious in the tournament’s third-place game, ensuring their season will continue with a berth in next week’s NorCal playoffs. The brackets will be unveiled on Sunday and the tournaments begin on Tuesday. Las Lomas (16-14) was eliminated from NorCal contention with the loss.
Penelope Lee scored 11 first-half points and provided the leadership of a floor general down the stretch, according to MA coach Zach Wahle. MA also got 12 points from Navah Bailey, including a 7-for-8 performance from the free-throw line in the second half. MA’s post combo of Sterling Colpitts and Lucy Robinson scored 10 points each. Ann McDermott also scored five points for MA.
The Wildcats might be making their first trip to NorCals in program history, according to both Wahle and athletic director Rob Rafeh.
