Max Greenfield on His Rubbermaid Campaign
Men’s Journal: Max, what made you want to team up with Rubbermaid for this ad?
Max Greenfield: These opportunities come your way every once in a while. You try to decipher if you have any sort of organic connection. This really made me laugh. And also, I'll be in the kitchen, because I can't go to sleep if the kitchen's unclean, and I'll think to myself, ‘I wonder if when I die, they're going to show me a pie chart of how I spent my life. I think cleaning and organizing is going to take up so much of the pie—and I'm going to go, Wow. Why?!?’
Men’s Journal: Do you know the movie Defending Your Life?
Max Greenfield: Yes, big time. One of my favorites. Yeah.
It's like, I'm sitting in a chair, and they're going, ‘You spent what is the equivalent of many years just organizing your kitchen.’ And I think it's just me holding on to the last little bit of control I have in my life. Our daughter’s 16. Our son is 10. I’m not the only one who works in an unpredictable business. I think the world seems to be very unpredictable right now, and it feels like, ‘At least my kitchen is organized and clean. I can control that to some degree.’
Men’s Journal: That sounds like an ad itself.
Max Greenfield: Yeah, and the Rubbermaid products were ones that we already used in the house. I have friends of mine who I work with, we make fun of each other for how much we use them, and what our refrigerators look like, and how stacked it is. What's great is you’re dealing with a really clean person if you open up someone's fridge, and it's just, like, ‘boom, boom, boom.’ and it looks like a tower. It's almost a pyramid tower of the EasyStore containers. It's part of the branding on these Rubbermaid EasyStore products, that they stack, and they come in different sizes. It's unbelievable. I use them, my friends use them. It just felt very organic and easy. I was like, ‘Of course I'll do this.’ I was worried that somebody was looking in my kitchen.

Men’s Journal: Once a week, I cut up fruits and vegetables for my daughter for her school lunches, and I have them stacked up in my fridge as well.
Max Greenfield: Yeah, totally. I find the kids like food stored in these types of containers way more than they like them in a plastic bag. And then you can organize the food within the container, and that's just a whole other level.

Men’s Journal: So, I have to ask, what do you think Schmidt from New Girl would think of Rubbermaid containers and you being in this ad?
Max Greenfield:This would have been the pinnacle of his life. I think this would have been it for Schmidt. This is his dream campaign. I think Schmidt would really be excited to walk around and tell people that he's a Rubbermaid model.
Men’s Journal: So does that mean you're going to be going around telling people that?
Max Greenfield: Yes. I mean, that's how I should have said it, but it's a lot safer to say it if Schmidt said it. Some people might say spokesperson, or we did a campaign for EasyStore, but I'd like to say that I'm a Rubbermaid EasyStore model.
Men’s Journal: I think you should get business cards.
Max Greenfield: I'm hoping that you can spread the word and really get that out there.
Men’s Journal: I'll do my best. As somebody who has played that beloved character, how do you feel about being able to tap into a similar energy as Schmidt for this Rubbermaid EasyStore ad?
Max Greenfield: It's sort of the best of both worlds where you go, ‘Oh, I know, I know why you're asking me to do this.’ When the fit works in that way, it's great. And it makes sense, it makes sense for everybody. And then everybody knows why you're doing it and why you're a part of it. When it's organic and the fit is right like this, it makes these things really fun.
