US Monitoring Afghanistan Situation as Airstrikes and Border Clashes Escalate
The United States says it is closely monitoring rising tensions in Afghanistan as cross-border airstrikes and clashes intensify.
The United States Embassy in Afghanistan, operating from Qatar, said it is aware of escalating tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan and is closely monitoring developments.
In a statement, the mission stressed that recent events highlight the “severe risk” of remaining in or traveling to Afghanistan. It reminded U.S. citizens that the travel advisory remains at Level 4, “Do Not Travel” due to civil unrest, crime, terrorism, arbitrary detention, kidnapping, and limited health facilities.
Pakistani airstrikes reportedly began overnight targeting Kabul, Paktia, and Kandahar, with aircraft remaining in Afghanistan airspace until around 9 a.m. in search of additional targets.
Reports have also indicated clashes along the Afghanistan–Pakistan border, while major crossing points remain closed amid rising security concerns.
Taliban officials have said their forces responded to Pakistani air operations with counterattacks on border posts, describing their actions as defensive measures to protect Afghanistan territory.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has previously claimed that dozens of Pakistani soldiers were killed and several posts captured during recent fighting, though these claims have not been independently verified.
Pakistani authorities maintain that their air operations were launched in response to security threats and militant activity originating from Afghanistan soil, describing the strikes as targeted and necessary.
Islamabad has warned that any further provocations would be met with decisive action, emphasizing that it reserves the right to respond under international law to safeguard national security.
The U.S. mission also noted that due to the suspension of embassy operations in Afghanistan, Washington is unable to provide routine or emergency consular services to American citizens inside the country.
