2010 Best Picture Oscar Nominee Ranked 'Most Overrated' Movie of All Time
Finding the "most overrated" anything in the world is always a work of subjectivity. Fans of one particular piece of art might not love another that itself is beloved by an entirely different group.
When it comes time to find the most overrated movie of all time, a number of familiar titles are bandied about - and often include some of the most well-respected movies in the industry. Buzzfeed attempted to tackle the "most overrated" movie chase and ended up with (beloved) La La Land as the top choice, but every list is entirely different.
Ranking site The Top Ten's did its best to find the actual move overrated movie of all time and, once again, it's a polarizing choice.
Fans Break With 'Uninspired' Copy 'Avatar'
Avatar received the most votes as the most overrated movie of all time in the new poll as fans called out its similarity to Pocahontas when discussing its failed originality - though most were still blown away by the futuristic visuals presented at the time.
"Avatar is one of the most overrated movies ever, with an unoriginal plot and really annoying, boring characters. Critics praised the film mostly because of the impressive visuals, which overshadowed their judgment of the rest of the movie," one critic of the movie said.
"I sat in the movie theater completely bored out of my mind for three hours. For a movie about blue aliens, in another planet, in the distant future, this was just unoriginal and uninspiring. Might as well go watch Dances with Wolves or Pocahontas, same themes but done correctly," offered another.
Avatar Nominated for Best Picture in 2010
James Cameron's epic received eight Academy Award nominations including best picture and best director, which he lost to his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow, who won big with The Hurt Locker. The movie won three Oscars, for best art direction, best visual effects and best cinematography, and set a box office record before being surpassed by Avengers: Endgame only to retake the thrown as the highest-grossing movie of all-time nearly $3 billion, according to Box Office Mojo.
Follow-up Avatar: The Way of Water sits No. 3 on the list at over $2.3 billion while 2025's Avatar: Fire and Ash sits in 16th at $1.47 billion.
