Revealed: The true cost of sacking Ruben Amorim at Manchester United
Manchester United parted ways with head coach Ruben Amorim shortly after the turn of the year, bringing a turbulent chapter to an abrupt end.
The Portuguese tactician spent 14 months at the helm, but underwhelming results and a growing rift with the club hierarchy ultimately sealed his fate.
United’s second-quarter results have revealed that they could end up paying around £16 million in compensation to Amorim and his assistants following his dismissal.
The statement states (via The Athletic): “A provision of £15.9m ($21.4m), representing the maximum potential amount of future settlement payments.”
United also wrote off £6.3m in amortised fees that were paid to Sporting CP after his appointment in November 2024.
The financial hit represents a significant setback for the Old Trafford outfit, particularly at a time when hundreds of staff members have been made redundant amid aggressive cost-cutting measures.
INEOS had placed enormous faith in Amorim, believing he was the architect capable of restoring past glories at the Theatre of Dreams.
Co-owner Jim Ratcliffe publicly backed the manager, even suggesting he would be afforded three years to revive the club’s fortunes.
Ultimately, his refusal to adapt and evolve his system led to a gradual erosion of trust.
Amorim also targeted Jason Wilcox and hinted that the hierarchy were overly influenced by punditry, including criticism from Gary Neville.
While the 41-year-old undeniably lifted morale within the dressing room, his uncompromising approach ultimately hastened his downfall.
The £15.9m settlement is a huge sum and could have been channelled into strengthening the squad or upgrading infrastructure.
The responsibility now rests squarely on INEOS to ensure their next managerial appointment is precise and progressive.
After a chaotic two-year period marked by repeated missteps, another costly error would be difficult to justify.
