Match Preview
Raith Rovers travel to North Lanakshire on Wednesday evening, to take on Airdrie in the semi-final of the KDM Evolution Trophy.
Rovers will be looking to make it to their fourth final in the competition, after winning it against Rangers in 2014 and Queen of the South in 2022, and also losing to Hamilton Accies in the final a year later.
Rovers also qualified for the final in 2020 after defeating Partick Thistle in the semi-finals at Firhill, but the abandonment of the season meant that the final against Inverness Caledonian Thistle was never played.
Airdrie are also looking to compete in their fourth final, and won this competition just two seasons ago, defeating Welsh side The New Saints 2-1 in the final.
They’ll be hoping that history can repeat itself, as they reached that final by knocking Raith out at the semi-final stage with a 1-0 win at Stark’s Park.
Both sides have reached this year’s semi-finals by knocking out two side from League One and one from the Championship on penalties.
Rovers disposed of Hamilton and Queen of the South before travelling to Lesser Hampden and defeating Queen’s Park on spot kicks, while Airdrie took care of Alloa in the last 32 and Montrose in the last 16.
It looked like their run was coming to an end against Arbroath in their quarter final tie, going 2-0 down with half an hour remaining, but goals from Lewis McGrattan and Euan Henderson restored parity before the Diamonds booked their place in the semi finals with a spot kick victory.
Rovers will be hoping it’s third time lucky against Aaron Taylor-Sinclair’s side in this competition, as outwith the semi-final loss in 2024, they lost their only other meeting in 2002, when Airdrie ran out comfortable 3-0 winners in the first round of the Bell’s Challenge Cup.
Wednesday evening’s match referee will be Sean Murdoch.
Head-To-Head Record:
Airdrie wins: 17
Raith Rovers wins: 20
Draws: 15
