Robert Mugabe Resurfaces — Not in Politics, But in Court
The name of Robert Mugabe is once again dominating headlines — this time not from a political podium, but from inside a South African courtroom.
His son, Chatunga Bellarmine Mugabe, appeared before the court facing serious charges including attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and defeating the course of justice.
Chatunga and his co-accused, Thobias Mugabe Matonhodze, are accused of shooting a gardener at the Mugabe family residence in Johannesburg’s affluent Hyde Park suburb last Thursday.
The gardener, who sustained severe injuries, remains hospitalised.
Police reportedly failed to recover the firearm allegedly used in the shooting when they arrived at the scene, leading to additional allegations that the weapon was concealed.
The case has been postponed to 3 March for a formal bail application. The State is expected to oppose bail.
The Johannesburg property where the incident occurred was reportedly purchased in 2017 for R43 million while Mugabe was still Zimbabwe’s Head of State.
Meanwhile, Chatunga’s mother, Grace Mugabe, cannot travel to South Africa to support her son due to a 2017 arrest warrant linked to the alleged assault of South African model Gabriella Engels.
Years after his fall from power, Mugabe’s name has resurfaced — this time carried into court through the troubles of his own bloodline.
