LUCTONIANS 15 – 11 CINDERFORD
A GOOD WIN, AS CINDY ALWAYS TOUGH
Luctonians RFC vs Cinderford RFC
Saturday 21st February 2026 – Mortimer Park
Match Report by Geoff Vickress
A game of two halves at Mortimer park, saw the home side persevere and eventually claim a deserved victory over a very staunch and defensive Cinderford. The first half was played with a strong wind behind Cindy, and they kept the home side in their own half for long periods without troubling the scoreboard, apart from a couple of penalty kicks at goal from Jack Condliffe.
Cinderford scored first from the boot of Condliffe, when he knocked over his first penalty with a straightforward attempt from in front of the posts, after only 4 minutes. This after Lucs were penalised for being offside (0-3).
But Lucs were ahead almost from the restart when Starman, No8 Jack Goodwin, was at the back of a driving maul to dot down after 6 minutes; The conversion being missed (5-3). The home side were reduced to 14 players when second row John Kelly was shown a yellow for a high tackle on Condliffe minutes later. But it wasn’t until the half hour mark that the scoreboard was troubled again, as both sides’ defence was superb in difficult conditions, neither allowing any opportunity to make line breaks or get beyond the whitewash.
Condliffe did add his second penalty when the home side failed to roll away from a tackle on their 22 line, and it was tapped over with ease with the tail wind. Half time arrived, and Cinderford had a small lead at the break.
Half Time Score
Luctonians RFC 5 – 6 Cinderford RFC
The wind dissipated as the half time interval passed and Lucs, who may have been hoping for some advantage gain second half, had to graft their way back into the match. Cinderford prop, Matt Cotton was shown a yellow for collapsing a Lucs driving maul early in the second half, and the home side capitalised when Jack Goodwin was again their hero as he weaved his way over from close-in, to bag his second try on 46 minutes from the resultant scrum; Conversion again missed (10-6).
The home side then spent almost the entire half in Cinderford territory, but a well marshalled defensive line from the visitors saw them keep the home side at bay for long periods. The introduction of Tom Jones just after the hour was the key, as his first touch, a deft kick-pass out to wing Rob Aikman, saw him run in freely to score and give the home side breathing room at 15-6, with the conversion again missed.
And this was to remain the score line until the very last play, with all Lucs superior possession not resulting in them gaining any further score. It was as the clock was winding down into the last minute when Condliffe, an ex Luctonian, darted over to secure Cinderford a losing bonus point in what was their only visit to the Lucs red zone in the second half, for a final scoreline of 15-11, as he missed his conversion attempt.
