Japan Donates $4 Million To WFP For Food Aid In Afghanistan
The World Food Programme (WFP) in Afghanistan announced that the Government of Japan has contributed four million dollars to fund emergency food assistance and nutrition support across the country. The announcement was made in a statement released on Sunday.
According to WFP, the funding will enable life-saving food assistance for approximately 80,000 Afghans over a 12-month period. The agency said that families facing acute food insecurity, particularly in vulnerable and hard-to-reach areas, will be prioritized under the program.
In addition to general food support, around 30,000 mothers and young children will receive specialized nutritional services aimed at preventing and treating malnutrition. WFP warned that women and children remain among the most affected groups as Afghanistan continues to grapple with widespread poverty and limited access to healthcare.
“This support will help save lives and prevent the spread of hunger,” the agency said in its statement, stressing that sustained international assistance remains critical as millions struggle to meet basic food needs.
Separately, the Japanese Embassy in Afghanistan announced the signing of a more than two-million-dollar agreement with the World Bank to support the Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund. The embassy said the funding will focus on assisting vulnerable populations, including women and children, through essential services and development programs.
Japan has remained one of Afghanistan’s key humanitarian donors. Officials noted that Tokyo has pledged around 20 million dollars in humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan in 2026, reflecting continued international concern over the country’s economic collapse and mounting humanitarian pressures.
Afghanistan is facing one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, with millions requiring food assistance amid economic stagnation, climate shocks, and reduced foreign aid. Aid agencies have repeatedly warned that funding shortfalls could severely impact life-saving operations in the months ahead.
