1974: The reigning Cy Young winner, Tom Seaver, became the highest-paid pitcher in baseball, signing a one-year, $172,000 deal with the Mets. It marked the last time Seaver and the Mets saw eye to eye on his value.
He finished 11-11 with a 3.20 ERA, well above his 1973 mark, while receiving just 17 runs of support in his 11 losses and recording eight quality starts that ended in no-decisions. A sore hip contributed to his uneven year, though he posted a 2.63 ERA over his final 11 starts.
In his last outing, Seaver struck out 14 to secure a seventh straight 200-strikeout season, but still took a 2–1 loss to Jim Lonborg and the Philadelphia Phillies.
