Guest Reveals 'Really Pretentious' Dress Code for 6 Events at 'Old-Money' Wedding, & It's Got People Stumped

A wedding guest was left utterly shocked and annoyed after receiving a dress code for an upcoming family wedding.

Taking to Reddit’s popular “Wedding Shaming” forum, the person explained that their sister-in-law was tying the knot.

The family is “incredibly wealthy” and lives “in an incredibly wealthy, old-money city,” so the Redditor expected that they’d have to “go all out” in terms of wardrobe.

However, they did not expect to receive an outlandish dress code for the wedding and several other events surrounding it. They described the “dress code guidance” as being “just a disaster.”

After seeing it all laid out, fellow Redditors could not agree more.

In their post, the person pointed out that all of the events were going to be taking place in New England.

“Right off the bat I figured we would be expected to go all out. Fine, whatever. I love an excuse to get dressed up,” they wrote. “But I did not expect whatever *this* is.”

For the engagement party, which takes place in February, the dress code was deemed “Sundress Smart.” That’s followed by a “Connecticut Casual” bridal shower, which left the guest wondering “Wtf is that.”

During the wedding weekend, there’s a “business casual” dress code for a welcome luncheon followed by a “cocktail formal” rehearsal dinner.

For the actual wedding, which takes place on the beach, the dress code was listed as “white tie formal,” prompting the guest to write, “They are getting married in the literal sand.”

That’s not all, though. The wedding weekend ends with a post-wedding brunch, which guests are expected to attend in “beach formal” attire.

“I will be buying exactly two outfits for this entire ordeal and splitting them between the events,” the person wrote.

Fellow Redditors rushed in to comment on the dress code, which one person described as “really pretentious.” However, they were able to offer some guidance that the original poster even described as being “actually really helpful.”

For “sundress smart,” they recommended a “long sleeve sun dress” with the addition of a jacket. The poster described it as being “resort wear,” and even mentioned “those multicolored boho dresses from the Hamptons.”

“Connecticut Casual” was compared to “country club wear,” meaning “a nice dress, simple and understated jewelry with one nicer and larger bangle.”

The commentor put the guest in “casual trousers and a sweater or shell and jacket” for the business casual luncheon and a “knee length mikado silk dress” in a “fun color,” with jewelry and “cute heels.”

They added that white tie formal for the beach “is obnoxious,” saying that they’d need a ballgown.

“I would 100% ask in all seriousness has she put down anything on the sand for the guests to walk on? Will it be at a country club overlooking the water? Are you expecting guests to walk on sand? Is she providing shoes or shoe covers?” the Redditor added.

As a “snarky” joke they wrote, “You can ask what color will the beach flooring be? This implies she is having flooring and it would be custom. If she says the beach, you can ask if she actually expects guests to walk with their shoes in the sand in a ball gown. That is gauche.”

Others had more sarcastic recommendations.

“A tuxspeedo will solve all your problems. Formal and beachwear at the same time,” someone wrote.

Another person commented, “Please wear a bikini and heels to the beach formal event.” The idea took on new life as a Redditor recommended adding elbow-length gloves.

“Make sure they’re chunky heels so they don’t sink into the sand,” yet another person helpfully added.

Stumped on the idea of “sundress smart,” someone asked if the dress had to be paired with a pearl necklace that “crossed over on the Mayflower.”

“WTF?! These are all pretty ridiculous, but ‘sundress smart’ kills me. A sundress in New England in February is some ‘Freeze Your A– Off Fancy’ nonsense,” another person wrote.
