Over 50 Killed in Armed Attack on Village in Northern Nigeria
At least 50 people were killed after gunmen attacked a village in northern Nigeria’s Zamfara state, amid a surge in insecurity across the region.
According to Reuters, the assault began Thursday evening in the village of Tungan Dutsi in the Bukkuyum area and continued into early Friday.
Attackers reportedly set homes ablaze and opened fire on residents attempting to flee, causing heavy casualties and abducting several women and children.
Hamisu A. Faru, a lawmaker representing Bukkuyum South in the Zamfara state assembly, confirmed that at least 50 deaths had been recorded, adding that the gunmen moved from village to village during the attack.
Armed groups locally referred to as “bandits” have intensified raids in recent months, carrying out mass killings and kidnappings for ransom in several northern states.
Zamfara has been one of the hardest-hit regions, with repeated attacks overwhelming local security forces and deepening fears among rural communities.
Authorities have pledged stronger military operations to curb the violence, but attacks continue despite ongoing security efforts.
The latest massacre underscores the persistent security crisis in northern Nigeria, where armed groups continue to target vulnerable villages with deadly raids and abductions.
