Sports briefs: Handful of local wrestlers move into section semifinals
Novato High heavyweight Braeden Carroll pinned his opponent from Napa in Friday’s boys wrestling quarterfinals to reach the semifinals of the North Coast Section Championships at James Logan High in Union City, which continue Saturday.
Tam’s Dylan G. Hayes (215) earned a pair of pinfall wins to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
Redwood’s Dylan Morton (132) and Tam’s Dylan Van Doren (150) both went 1-1 and will wrestle in the consolation rounds Saturday, while the Giants’ Hayden Schepps (157) recovered to go 3-1 and stay alive.
Redwood’s Rex Kohner (106) and Ayaan Naseer (113), Novato’s Jiriah Vannasy (120), Tam’s Cole Mapp (165), and San Marin’s AJ Conkey (190) all went 2-2. Rainer Grabenkort (126) of Archie Williams High went 1-2.
Girls wrestling
Archie Williams senior Sofi De Jesus and San Marin High junior Catania DeKeyrel (155) are both closing in on a berth in the CIF State Wrestling Championships.
De Jesus (105 pounds) and DeKeyrel (155 pounds) went 2-0 with a pin and a tech fall to advance to the semifinals on the first day of the North Coast Section Girls Championships at James Logan High in Union City on Friday. The top two wrestlers advance to State.
Novato’s Molly Lloyd-Hutchinson (110) is battling through the consolation rounds after going 3-1 Friday, while the Mustangs’ Derilem Rodas (170) went 1-1 and is in consolation action Saturday. San Rafael’s Mariana Barrios (140) went 1-2.
Boys soccer
Goalie Nick Vicente registered his third consecutive postseason shutout, made a penalty kick and saved another one as No. 4 Redwood survived a stern test from No. 5 Acalanes (7-9-6) in the NCS Division III playoffs, winning 5-4 on penalties after a scoreless game through regulation and overtime on Friday.
Vicente came up with a huge save in regulation to keep the Giants in the game. Vicente also made Redwood’s third spot kick in the shootout. Redwood (8-6-4) will either travel to No. 1 Rancho Cotate or host No. 9 Pittsburg in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Boys basketball
The Branson School lived up to its billing as top seed, cruising to a 71-53 victory against No. 9 Marin Academy at College of Marin on Friday night. The Bulls advance to the NCS D-III semifinals on Tuesday night against either No. 4 San Domenico or No. 5 Brave Christian. Girls basketball
Top-seeded Redwood rolled to a 62-28 victory against Maria Carrillo in the NCS D-I quarterfinals on Friday night. The Giants are set to host No. 4 Acalanes — 69-52 winners against No. 5 Alameda — in Tuesday’s semifinals. - Archie Williams saw its season come to an end following a 68-47 win against Miramonte on Friday night. The No. 12 Peregrine Falcons (15-12) were unable to upset the No. 4 Matadors (16-13) after successfully taking out No. 5 Saint Mary’s on Tuesday.
Women’s basketball
Kamari Johnson came off the bench to lead College of Marin with 15 points, but the Mariners could not generate enough offense in Thursday’s 100-53 loss to Laney to close out the regular season. Isabella Zepeda added 11 points for the Mariners (15-13, 7-7 BVC), who also got 10 points each from Jaidyn Brown and Jamaia Harrison.
Men’s basketball
K’Hamani Olivacce scored 22 points and Olivier Borgol added 20 as College of Marin kept up its momentum for an expected playoff push following a 94-76 win against Laney on Thursday night.
The Mariners (19-9, 10-6 Bay Valley) won their fourth consecutive game and are expected to make the 3C2A playoffs for the first time since 2015 when the seeding meeting takes place on Saturday. COM is in line to potential play a home playoff game on Wednesday.
- Senior Nick Medeiros scored a team-high 25 points to pace Dominican University (15-10, 10-9) to a furious first-half start Thursday, but Biola rallied in the second half to beat the Penguins, 87-76 victory. Nick Medeiros added a game-high eight assists to his line.
Prep baseball
Redwood put together a five-run rally in the top of the second inning to secure a 7-3 win against Analy on Friday. Theo Trono and Noah Gersch drove in two runs apieces as the Giants (1-0) won their season opener. Rowan Borghuis had three hits to pace Redwood.
- Noah Shapiro had three hits and drove in four runs as San Rafael dropped its season opener 12-8 against Petaluma on Friday. Mikey Giannino drove in two runs for the Bulldogs (0-1) while Lachlan Royston had a pair of hits.
College athletics
College of Marin, celebrating its centennial year, is relaunching the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame this year.
“As we mark 100 years of College of Marin, relaunching our Athletics Hall of Fame is a meaningful way to honor the people who built our athletic legacy,” COM’s Ryan Byrne said in a press release. “We invite alumni, former coaches, staff, and community members to submit nominations and help us recognize those who deserve to be celebrated during this historic milestone.”
Nominees may include former student-athletes, coaches, teams, administrators, and contributors who have demonstrated outstanding athletic achievement, leadership, sportsmanship, and service to College of Marin. A special category is also available to honor impactful faculty and staff members whose work significantly advanced the Athletics Department.
COM is now accepting nominations for future Hall of Fame classes. Nomination forms can be found on the online at https://athletics.marin.edu/. The deadline for nominations is March 27.
Youth sports
San Domenico boys basketball coach Tyler Gaffaney is launching “Bring Back Play”, a grass-roots push to keep pickup games and unstructured play a part of children’s lives. Gaffaney aims to launch Free Play Fridays in San Anselmo and Free Play Sundays in Novato in the Spring, hoping to offer unstructured activities for children in grades 4-8. Children who sign up at www.bringbackplay.org arrive for a 3-hour session of free play where they “run the show.”
