"World-class" Man Utd star poised to start vs Everton after Michael Carrick update
Manchester United have been handed a timely boost ahead of the Premier League clash against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday night.
The Red Devils have fared impressively since Michael Carrick was appointed as the caretaker manager.
They have picked up 13 points from a possible 15 at their disposal, and they are currently placed fourth in the standings, one point ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea.
United shared the spoils at West Ham United earlier this month after a four-match winning streak, and the onus will be on returning to winning ways against Everton.
Ahead of the game, Carrick has confirmed that Mason Mount and Matthijs de Ligt won’t be involved, but the former is not far off from an injury comeback.
Meanwhile, Patrick Dorgu is also sidelined for the encounter. He is out for a substantial period of time after his hamstring injury against Arsenal last month.
While the trio are out of contention, United have received a timely boost with Harry Maguire fully fit after his hamstring injury scare at the London Stadium.
The England international, once described as ‘world-class‘ by Adam Lallana, was spotted holding his hamstring after making a recovery run against the Hammers.
He managed to continue until after the hour mark when Leny Yoro replaced him. Yoro had a fine cameo and made a couple of key blocks before United’s late equaliser (1-1).
United confirmed that Maguire was back in training with his teammates last week. Carrick’s lack of update on the defender today suggests he is fine and ready to go.
Maguire has been a revelation since returning to the starting fold under Carrick. He has formed a terrific partnership with Lisandro Martinez in the heart of the defence.
The 32-year-old has hardly put a foot wrong in the last five league matches and looks poised to continue in central defence when the Red Devils travel to Merseyside.
Maguire’s current contract expires at the end of June, but talks are ongoing over a renewal. He is likely to prolong his stay, with the club set for a heavier workload with a likely return to Europe next season.
The centre-back was out of contention for an England World Cup berth earlier this campaign, but manager Thomas Tuchel has recently opened the door for a surprise recall before the global tournament.
Maguire has a big role to play for United as they seek to qualify for the Champions League.
