Racesafe adds ‘slim and unobtrusive’ air jacket to its safety range for riders

British safety brand Racesafe has launched its first lightweight, slimline inflating gilet – the VeloAir air jacket.

“Protection shouldn’t be something you constantly notice – it should simply be there when it’s needed,” said Racesafe managing director James How. “We’ve gone to great lengths to develop an air jacket that meets the Racesafe standard that delivers confidence without compromising comfort, movement or style.”

The VeloAir meets the safety standard for equestrian airbags (NF S72-800:2022) and promises rapid inflation (in 0.095 seconds).

The bespoke airbag pattern has been designed to help maintain a slim, unobtrusive silhouette and a lighter more streamlined fit, while maintaining maximal impact absorption.

The VeloAir air jacket comes in black or midnight blue, in young rider or adult sizes, and has an RRP of £355 (young rider) and £425 (adult). It is designed with a water-repellent, wipe-clean fabric that can be worn in all weathers.

Event rider Piggy March said: “I’ve really enjoyed riding in the VeloAir, it’s so subtle and the colour choices match my show jacket really closely.”

Showjumper Chloe Winchester has found it comfortable, breathable and flattering. She said: “I find it fits really well, and I don’t find myself adjusting it throughout the day.”

For more information, visit racesafe.co or visit a Racesafe retailer for a professional fitting.

Are air jackets worth it?

Though more expensive than standard body protectors, many riders consider air jackets to be a worthwhile investment.

They offer rapid, targeted protection in a fall, whether you are schooling, hacking, or competing, inflating in milliseconds to help reduce the impact on key areas, such as the spine, chest and pelvis.

Air jackets can be worn on their own, or over body or back protectors. If you are competing in cross-country under British Eventing rules, it is compulsory to wear a body protector of the appropriate standard, but an air jacket can also be worn over the top.

Do I need to get an air jacket fitted?

Yes, a proper fit is important to ensure your air jacket works as intended. Ideally you should get one fitted at your local equestrian store where they can also demonstrate how it works.

Most brands offer size guides based on height and chest measurements, but it’s worth trying on different models if possible.

If you intend to wear your air jacket over a body or back protector then ensure you take that to your fitting appointment.
