Iran Warns UN It Will Target US Bases If Attacked
Iran has warned the United Nations it will target US bases and assets across the region if attacked, escalating tensions.
Iran said in a letter to António Guterres that any attack by the United States would be met with a “decisive response,” including strikes on American bases, facilities and assets in the region.
In the letter dated Friday, February 20, Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations said threats from Donald Trump indicate a “real danger of aggression” against Tehran.
Meanwhile, the The Washington Post reported that Trump is preparing for a large-scale military strike against Iran, citing people familiar with the matter.
Trump has repeatedly said Iran must reach a meaningful agreement with Washington or face serious consequences, reinforcing his administration’s hardline stance.
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have surged in recent months over Iran’s nuclear programme and regional activities. Previous confrontations have raised fears of a broader conflict in the Middle East.
Iran has long warned that US military bases across the Gulf and neighbouring countries would be within range of its missiles in the event of hostilities.
The latest exchange of threats signals a further deterioration in diplomatic efforts, increasing uncertainty across the region.
