CARL ALBERT STATE COLLEGE STUDENTS VISIT JUDGE PARKER’S COURTROOM FOR HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCE

POTEAU, OK — Eleven students from Carl Albert State College, along with two faculty members, recently participated in an educational field trip to Judge Parker’s Courtroom in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The visit, held Tuesday, February 3, was organized through the Oklahoma Aspiring Educators Association (OAEA) and the CASC History Club.

The trip provided students with a hands-on learning opportunity that connected regional history with classroom application — an experience especially meaningful for those preparing to become future educators.

During the visit, students explored the history of Fort Smith, including significant battles fought in the area, and learned about the life and legacy of Isaac C. Parker, who served as a federal judge in the late 19th century. Known for his role in administering justice in Indian Territory, Parker’s courtroom remains an important historic landmark that reflects the region’s unique place in American history.

Following the guided tour, students applied what they had learned by practicing lesson-planning skills. Working collaboratively, they developed a 45-minute lesson focused on Fort Smith and Judge Parker that could be presented to fifth-grade students. The activity allowed aspiring educators to blend historical content with age-appropriate instructional strategies, reinforcing both their subject knowledge and teaching skills.
