"I can guarantee": Romano provides update on Man Utd links with "world-class" midfielder
Manchester United have not agreed anything with Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka, according to reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Red Devils are expected to bolster their midfield department during the summer transfer window with the prospect of multiple exits.
Casemiro is poised to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires on June 30.
Manuel Ugarte could be on his way out too. The Uruguayan ace has played second fiddle to Casemiro and has been linked with a departure.
Bayern’s Leon Goretzka has emerged as a potential target, with his contract set to expire this summer. He is prepared to pursue a new challenge.
United have been mentioned as possible suitors, but Romano has clarified that the German has nothing agreed with the Red Devils this summer.
He said on his YouTube channel: “A great player, Leon Goretzka will leave Bayern as a free agent. We are starting to have several rumours around Goretzka and I am sure there is going to be plenty more because he is one of the most interesting free agents.
“In Italy, there are some clubs interested. Napoli, there were links with Milan as well. In Germany, some clubs would like to try for Goretzka, but my understanding is Goretzka’s priority would be to explore a move abroad in the summer.
“From the Premier League, some calls took place. I can guarantee, Goretzka has not agreed anything with Manchester United. So nothing is pre-agreed or signed between Goretzka and Man United. Let’s see what United decide to do with midfielders.”
United unlikely to pursue deal for Goretzka
Goretzka, described as ‘world-class‘ by Bundesliga’s official website, has been a mainstay for Bayern over the years. He has been a regular starter in the German top-flight this campaign, but has found himself on the bench for the Champions League matches.
The midfielder has fared well with a passing accuracy of 93 percent. He has averaged three recoveries and one tackle per game, losing possession just five times per league outing. Despite this, we don’t believe United will offer him a long-term contract.
Goretzka is not the best when it comes to winning duels, with just three on average. Furthermore, his age (31) and huge salary should hamper his prospects of joining the club. He earns a basic salary of £215,000 per week and may not accept a sizeable pay cut.
There is also the prospect of a huge signing-on fee to land him on a Bosman deal. United are more likely to pursue two young defensive midfielders with future resale value. We don’t see the hierarchy contemplating bringing the German to Old Trafford.
