Minister Ben Phiri, Japanese Ambassador For Strengthening Collaborations Through Councils To Improve Economic Livelihoods
The Japanese Ambassador to Malawi, NAITO Yasushi, paid a courtesy call on Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dr. Ben Malunga Phiri, on Wednesday.
The two discussed strengthening collaborations through councils to improve economic livelihoods in Malawi.
Dr. Phiri welcomed the Ambassador, acknowledging Japan’s contributions to Malawi’s development, including the construction of the Lilongwe bridge.
He emphasised the need to decongest cities by providing infrastructure to balance urban development and service delivery, as many people migrate from rural areas seeking better opportunities.
“We appreciate the projects your government has undertaken, which have greatly helped our people. We look forward to continued diplomatic ties,” Dr. Phiri said, proposing city-to-city exchange relations to share ideas on city management.
Ambassador Yasushi expressed his government’s commitment to fulfilling promises, including the Nacala corridor, and sought more collaboration between the two countries.
“We aim to strengthen our relationship with Malawi, seeking cooperation in education and market-oriented farming to improve lives,” he said.
Dr. Phiri welcomed market-oriented farming, advising districts to identify specific farming strengths and encouraging impactful models showcasing its benefits.
