Prince William & Kate Middleton's Relationship Issues Allegedly Forced Another Royal To Intervene: 'I Can’t Do This Anymore'
It’s hard to picture Prince William without wife, Kate Middleton, but if it wasn’t for the late Queen Elizabeth II, their relationship may never have happened.
Royal insider Russell Myers claims that the queen stepped in to save her grandson’s relationship in an upcoming book, William and Catherine, The Monarchy’s New Era: The Inside Story, which will be published March 10. Myers told People that he drew on nearly 100 interviews to detail the royal romance between Kate and William, as “they are the pillars of the modern monarchy.”
In case you don’t remember, the Prince and Princess of Wales started dating while at the University of St. Andrews, before splitting in 2007. Their rocky relationship was saved after the queen intervened, according to Meyers.
“[The Queen] could see [Kate] had all the qualities of a future Queen,” Myers told the outlet. Apparently, Queen Elizabeth talked with her son, which proved a “catalyst for William changing course” and recognizing that “if he had faith in the relationship and his love for her, then that would be enough to carry them through.”
In an excerpt of Myers’ book shared with People, he writes that Middleton was at her wits’ end after she was surrounded by “more than 20 press photographers and five television crews” outside her apartment on her 25th birthday on Jan. 9, 2007. She had to fight through the horde of paparazzi to get to her car, and then they continued to take pictures of her through the car windows.
“Shaken and deeply distressed by the incident, Catherine called William in floods of tears,” Myers wrote. “A source close to the couple said the situation and resulting conversation was “incredibly distressing for both of them,” adding, “She [Catherine] said, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’ The situation was intolerable and William felt entirely helpless.”

After they seemed distant at a March 2007 appearance at the Cheltenham horse racing festival, a friend of Middleton told Myers that she gave William an ultimatum. “She wasn’t demanding an engagement, but she wanted a commitment, and if he couldn’t deliver that, well, then she left him in no doubt that it was best they go their separate ways,” the source told Myers. William responded by ending things with Middleton.
“Sensing William was struggling, the Queen invited him to Sunday lunch to judge his mood,” Myers wrote. “William was more than just crestfallen and worried about whether he was throwing away the one constant in his life. He was, according to one well-placed source, ‘completely broken.’ ‘In that moment the Queen advised her grandson that the only certain path is the one supported by faith. It was all she had to say,’ the source said.”
This backs up what a different source has said about the Queen’s involvement in Prince William and Middleton’s relationship. Royal author Andrew Morton told OK! Magazine in May 2022, that the late Queen spent “a lot more time supporting and nurturing the relationship between William and Catherine than she did with Charles and Diana.” This was for a specific reason, as she believed the couple are “very much as the future” of the monarchy, and she “wasn’t going to make that mistake again.”

The conversation Myers detailed between the Queen and William clearly had an impact on him, as he invited Middleton to a party soon after, and they talked for “hours.” According to Myers, “Catherine listened intently as William attempted to break the deadlock, laying out his reasons for doubting what they had. He talked of his fear of letting someone truly experience the world in which he lived, and also his fear of rejection if he did let himself get too close. Catherine, of course, knew that she still loved William deeply.”
They reconnected and ended up marrying in 2011, eventually welcoming kids Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7. Through the years, Middleton became closer with the Queen, with one source telling Us Weekly in Oct. 2021 that Middleton and the Queen have “a special bond” and that they often shared “one-on-one phone conversations.”
Hey, we can’t blame a grandma for encouraging a relationship between her grandson and a girl she liked! We would all do the same in her position, royalty or not.
