X Bars Under-13 Accounts, Tightens Protections for Young Users
X announced new safety rules barring under-13 accounts and restricting ads targeting minors, aiming to strengthen protections for young users worldwide online.
The platform said children under 13 will no longer be allowed to create accounts under new policies aimed at protecting minors online.
It also announced advertisers will be prohibited from specifically targeting users under 18 as part of stricter youth safety measures.
X said underage accounts will remain protected by default, limiting who can view their posts while restricting access to sensitive media content.
The company added it will use multiple age-verification methods, where legally required, to prevent minors from accessing inappropriate content.
Experts say stronger platform safeguards are increasingly necessary as studies link excessive social media use among children to anxiety, depression, and reduced attention spans.
Meanwhile, Australia passed a law banning social media accounts for users under 16, requiring platforms to enforce strict age verification measures.
Platforms face heavy fines if they fail to block underage users or adequately protect minors under the new nationwide online safety law.
