Teenager arrested after running towards US Capitol with shotgun

Police in Washington, D.C., have arrested a man who ran towards the US Capitol building holding a shotgun.

Police said the man dropped his weapon and complied when challenged by officers.

Congress was not in session when the arrest occurred, but officers warned people to avoid the area.

The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Carter Camacho, from Georgia, ran from an SUV towards the west side of the Capitol in ‘tactical gear’.

The car he had wasn’t registered to him, and he has ‘multiple addresses’. His motive is under investigation.

After running ‘several hundred yards’, he was tackled and ordered to drop his weapon.

Police Chief Michael Sullivan said he was wearing a vest, gloves, and had a gas mask in his car.

It’s not the first instance of someone bringing weapons to the US Capitol. In 2022, a man was arrested after carrying multiple unregistered guns and ammo in a ‘suspicious’ van.

Tony H Payne was arrested and charged with carrying an unregistered firearm, unregistered ammunition, and carrying a pistol without a license.

Payne, an 84-year-old man from Tunnel Hill, Georgia, was parked illegally on the 100 block of East Capitol Street.

When he was questioned by authorities, Payne said that he was there to deliver documents to the Supreme Court and admitted he was carrying firearms.

‘Weapons are banned from Capitol Grounds, yet dozens of people are arrested each year for violating the law,’ the Capitol police stated at the time.

In August 2022, a man shot himself after crashing his car into a barricade near the Capitol building.

And in 2021, a man was arrested after bringing multiple knives, a machete, and a bayonet near the headquarters of the Democratic National Convention.
