Bondi’s histrionics won’t stop Epstein questions
Re: “Bondi hearing a tense exchange” (Page A1, Feb. 12).
During questioning by Congress, Attorney General Pam Bondi used shouting as a technique to deflect difficult questions about President Donald Trump and the Epstein Files, citing the current strong stock market as an example of Trump’s success.
But Trump cannot be let off the hook for possible crimes just because he is perceived as doing some things right.
Even a criminal as notorious as mob boss Al Capone appears to have been a family man who supported projects in his community. Such benevolence, though admirable, didn’t erase the need for accountability when he committed tax evasion and murder.
Suspicions of criminal behavior, particularly of the kind in which young girls were sexually abused, need to be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated. The victims deserve to be heard, not drowned out by shouting and histrionics.

County should consider savings before taxes
Re: “Federal cuts spur talk of tax hike” (Page B1, Feb. 12).
County supervisors are proposing to increase the county sales tax from the current 8.75% to raise $150 million a year.
I served on the county grand jury 10 years ago that submitted a report (No. 1503) showing how the county could save nearly $100 million a year through negotiating a modest reform of unearned pension benefits. The board never took any action on the recommendation, apparently shying away from any action that would raise union opposition.
Why should voters be asked to pay for another tax increase when the board has not taken action on a pension reform that could result in major cost savings?

Moraga should display Pride flag for community
I urge the city of Moraga to raise the Pride flag in June for Pride month. Over 15 cities in Contra Costa County display a Pride flag, including Orinda and Lafayette. Why not Moraga?
The LGBTQ+ flag is a beacon of hope and safety for the LGBTQ+ community, particularly for young people.

Pick Porter’s record over Mahan’s cash
Re: “Tech titans and wealthy back Mahan campaign” (Page A1, Feb. 12).
Thank you for informing us that Silicon Valley is pouring millions of dollars into the gubernatorial campaign of Matt Mahan.
These are the same people who are more interested in not paying their fair share of taxes than in supporting affordable housing, police and fire departments, public education, child care, health care for the working poor and needy, senior services and our rich natural environment.
My support goes to the candidate who has exposed corporate greed, does not take corporate money and works for workers: Katie Porter.

We speak up, resist Trump’s autocracy
Donald Trump’s billionaires censoring journalists and closing newspapers, it’s not freedom; it’s despotism.
Trump giving pardons and government favors to financial contributors, it’s not fair; it’s bribery, corruption.
Trump suing the government he controls for $10 billion, it’s not moral, it’s not right; it’s theft.
Trump’s military jailing and deporting children without judicial process, it’s not American; it’s evil.
Trump’s thugs killing civilians, it’s not protection; it’s murder.
Trump’s agents taking control of state ballots, it’s not democracy; it’s dictatorship.
Dictatorship is not some vague danger; it’s a growing presence. Fair-minded, freedom-loving, democracy-protecting, courageous citizens must speak out now and resist in every way we can.
