Tell Me Lies Ending With Season 3, Showrunner Announces Night of Finale
Hulu's Tell Me Lies has come to an end.
The drama, starring Grace Van Patten and Jackson White, finished with its season three finale, according to showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer, who revealed the news the night the episode premiered.
“After three amazing seasons of Tell Me Lies, tonight’s episode will be the series finale," Oppenheimer wrote on Instagram. "This was always the ending my writing team and I had in mind, and we are insanely proud of it."
"Your incredible response to this season inspired us to explore whether there was another organic way to continue the story, but ultimately we felt it had reached its natural conclusion," the statement continued. "My main goal has always been to protect the quality of the show and give you the best experience I can give you.”
Tell Me Lies follows college freshman Lucy Albright (Van Patten) and college junior Stephen DeMarco (White) and their romantic relationship over the course of eight years. The show received mainly positive reviews from critics, although responses were polarized over some of its melodramatic plotpoints.
What makes this announcement so shocking, other than how sudden the statement was, is that Tell Me Lies was performing better than ever with viewers. The Season 3 premiere, which debuted last month, generated 5M views globally across Disney+ and Hulu in the first seven days of streaming, Deadline reports.
This is up 150% from the Season 1 premiere’s performance in the same time frame, Disney told the entertainment outlet. This is the first time that Disney has released specific viewership stats for the series, which would normally be encouraging news, had its showrunner not decided to end the series on her own terms. The series was especially popular with younger viewers, with social engagement stats reporting a staggering 580% jump compared to the previous season.
