Savannah Guthrie’s 'Today' Future in Question as She Remains Off Air for the 'Foreseeable Future'
As the search for Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy, continues, a looming question remains about her ongoing absence from the Today show.
It’s expected that the 54-year-old journalist will be off the air for the “foreseeable future” from the morning show while the investigation remains open, according to Page Six. Still, there are concerns that she might not return to Today with her contract almost up for renegotiation.
It sounds like her colleagues would love for her to remain on the show, a job she’s held since 2012. “The entire show and network is rallying together in support of our beloved colleague and friend as we navigate this unimaginable time,” an NBC insider told the media outlet. A Guthrie friend also shared that it’s “hurtful” for anyone to think she won’t return because it’s a “day-by-day” situation with her mother’s disappearance.
For now, former Today show co-anchor, Hoda Kotb, is filling in for Guthrie after she and current co-anchor, Craig Melvin, chose to stay behind in New York instead of covering the Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy.
Guthrie pleaded with her 84-year-old mom’s kidnappers in a February 16 Instagram video, looking visibly distraught over the disappearance, which is now in its 16th day.
“I wanted to come on … it’s been two weeks since our mom was taken and … I just wanted to come on and say that we still have hope and we still believe,” she said softly. “And I wanted to say that to whoever has her or knows where she is, that it’s never too late. And you’re not lost or alone, and it is never too late to do the right thing.”
Guthrie has been open about her faith, which has given her strength throughout her life, and it’s clear that she’s leaning into it at such a difficult time. “And we are here, and we believe in the essential goodness of every human being, and it’s never too late,” she added.
Nancy was last seen on January 31 at her Tucson, Arizona home.
