Should Patriots Sign Tyreek Hill After Reported Dolphins Release?
The Miami Dolphins are releasing Tyreek Hill, per NFL insider Tom Pelissero. Should the New England Patriots try to sign him?
The Patriots could use another elite weapon for Drake Maye, but is Hill the answer? Wide receiver could quickly become a priority if the Patriots release Stefon Diggs. His cap hit and age next season may not justify keeping him. Hill would be an elite replacement on paper, but has some major question marks.
Hill is an eight-time Pro Bowler, five-time First-Team All-Pro and Super Bowl champion. He has a case to be a Hall of Famer one day, but is rehabbing a major leg injury. He had surgery in September to repair a dislocated left knee and multiple torn ligaments, including his ACL, according to what his agent Drew Rosenhaus told ESPN’s Adam Schefter last year.
While his agent says Hill will play next season, it is not a certainty given the severity of his injury, per Pelissero. Hill’s release was expected. He would have had $11 million become fully guaranteed later this month.
Additionally, he has made some vague comments about his desire to leave the Dolphins over the course of the last year. He will now be a free agent, and the Patriots could become interested.
During his end of season press conference, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel noted that the goal is to find better, younger and cheaper players every offseason. Does Hill really fit those criteria?
Hill failed to record 1,000 receiving yards in 2024 and had 265 yards in four games last season. Much of that could be a result of poor quarterback play, but that does not change the fact that he will be 32 by the time next season starts.
If the Patriots release Diggs because his cap hit is too high to justify keeping him, signing Hill could be a lateral move. There is no telling what Hill’s production will look like after such a significant injury. The Patriots may be better off keeping Diggs or signing a different replacement.
However, if Hill is willing to sign a cheaper deal or a “prove it” deal, he would make sense as a Patriots target. At his best, he is one of the best receivers in the league, but it’s unclear how many teams would be willing to pay him as such after his injury.
Hill’s downfield ability, paired with Maye’s deep ball, could make the Patriots offense a nightmare for other teams. However, they should only take the risk of signing him if it is on a team-friendly deal.
