Winter Storm Warning Issued for Additional 4 Feet of Snow, Dangerous 75 mph Winds
The state of California and several bordering states are set to receive heavy snowfall as a deep trough off the West Coast continues to push through inland. While a significant portion of the West Coast will receive heavy rain, the mountain rangers are expected to be hit with several feet of snow.
"Mountain snow is expected along the Olympics, Cascades, and the Sierra, and will extend into the Rockies as another shortwave energy eject across the northern Plains on Tuesday. The heaviest snowfall is forecasted to occur over the Sierra Nevada, as multiple storm systems bring copious amounts of moisture along the higher terrain," the National Weather Service said.
"A cold frontal system will drop southeast into the Northern Plains and Upper Great Lakes by Tuesday evening into Wednesday bringing a chance for precipitation over the area. Precipitation will initially start as rain but will gradually change into snow over northern Montana and North Dakota, while Wisconsin and Minnesota will transition to a wintry mix by Wednesday."
NWS Calling for 3 Feet of Snow, Dangerous Winds
Over the next 24 hours the National Weather Service is calling for the following locations to receive up to three feet of snow: "San Bernardino County Mountains-Riverside County Mountains- Including the cities of Wrightwood, Lake Arrowhead, Crestline, Idyllwild-Pine Cove, Running Springs, Big Bear City, and Big Bear Lake."
Through Tuesday morning, the mountain communities above 7,500 feet will receive up to three feet of snow with 55 mph winds hitting the region.
"Another round of more widespread precipitation is expected for Tuesday night into Wednesday morning with additional snowfall of 3 to 6 inches from 5000 to 6000 feet, 6 to 12 inches from 6000 to 7000 feet, and 12 to 18 inches above 7000 feet. The snow level will fall to 3500 to 4500 feet for Wednesday afternoon. Southwest winds for Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon will gust to 55 to 75 mph on the desert slopes of the mountains," the NWS announced.
Accuweather Suggests Even More Snow
The Accuweather forecast is calling for up to four feet of snow in the region through Thursday.
"From Thursday, between 3-4 feet of snow is expected, with the heaviest period likely to be from Monday night through Tuesday. While snowfall totals on the order of feet will be disruptive for the region, there may be long-term benefits that come out of it," it said.
Those expecting to see heavy snowfall are encouraged to winterize outdoor faucets, apply these solutions for insulating windows, prepare for roof snow removal and apply salt to driveways and walkways in a manner that’s safe for children and pets.
