Mentors Supporting New Referees at ODP Invitational 2026
On Saturday, February 14, Maryland Referee Mentors were on-site at the ODP Invitational at Liberty Sports Park, working alongside many of our newest officials — most certified for less than one year. One thing that stood out was the number of green badges on the field. As we move into the spring season, it’s important to remember:
A green badge signifies an under-18 referee, and referee abuse toward underage officials is tripled.
That reality makes mentorship, education, and visible support even more important.
The day went extremely well. Our mentors observed, provided feedback, and, in many cases, watched referees implement it later in the event. We saw:
- Confidence grow from match to match
- Strong professionalism
- A willingness to listen and adjust
- A genuine desire to improve
This is exactly what development should look like. Maryland remains committed to encouraging and developing all referees, with an intentional emphasis on supporting and protecting those under 18. If you see a green badge this spring, remember:
You’re watching a young person learning the craft.
We’re proud of the work done at the ODP Invitational and grateful to our mentors, who continue to invest in the future of officiating in Maryland.
