Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dr Ben Malunga Phiri, has called for decisive action against corruption and stronger decentralisation policies to accelerate sustainable development across Africa.
Dr Phiri made the remarks in Zimbabwe, where he represented President Peter Mutharika at the 2026 Iconic Africa Awards, also known as the Iconic Africa Summit Honors 2026, held in Harare.
President Mutharika was celebrated for his outstanding leadership and political acumen.
Dr Phiri received the award from Zimbabwe’s Vice President, Dr Kembo Mohadi.
In his keynote address, Dr. Phiri outlined four key challenges slowing sustainable development in Africa: corruption, limited productivity, ego-driven leadership, and weak decentralisation systems.
He said corruption remains a major setback, draining resources meant for essential services such as healthcare, education, water and infrastructure.
“It is time to stigmatise corruption and change our mindset,” he said.Dr. Phiri also challenged Africans to improve productivity, noting that competing globally requires greater commitment, innovation and hard work.
On unity, he urged African nations to celebrate their own achievements and work together rather than allowing jealousy and ego to hinder progress.
He further described decentralisation as a critical pillar for development.
He cited Malawi’s devolution of five billion kwacha to councils as a landmark step towards empowering communities and strengthening local governance.“Development must be deliberate and people-centred,” he emphasised.
In an interview on the sidelines of the summit, Dr. Phiri said the recognition accorded to President Mutharika testifies to his dedication to Malawi and Africa’s progress.
He highlighted the President’s trailblazing achievements and commitment to democratic values.
