Marin creatives collaborate on special show
A unique multidisciplinary theatrical event closes this weekend at Marin Shakespeare Company’s indoor venue on Fourth Street in San Rafael.
Written and directed by Woodacre resident Melusina Gomez, “Let the Wind Sweep Through: A Conference of Birds” is inspired by Persian poet Attar of Nishapur’s 900-year-old Sufi epic “The Conference of Birds,” according to Kaya Mey, the show’s producer and movement director. The show is making its Marin debut thanks to Marin Shakespeare Company’s new Open Circle program, which supports experimental and community-centered performances.
“The production blends physical theater, aerial movement, mask work, puppetry, live Persian music and poetic language into a contemporary ritual experience centered on presence and collective transformation,” said Mey, who grew up in Marinwood, in a press release.
The event, which blends Sufi mysticism and Nahualismo, is presented by Haven Healing Arts, a Marin healing arts and community space devoted to embodied practice, ritual and collective transformation, and Moon Rope Ritual Theatre, a company rooted in physical theater, immersive staging and an exploration of gnosis through storytelling, in partnership with Crescent Moon Theater Productions.
“Let the Wind Sweep Through: A Conference of Birds” can be seen at 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday at the Marin Shakespeare Company at 514 Fourth St. in San Rafael. Donations requested. Get tickets at marinshakespeare.org/let-the-wind-sweep-through-a-conference-of-birds.
