10 pairs of adjustable wellies to suit all leg shapes

A pair of the best wellies for wide calves can be absolute lifesavers for equestrians and others who spend time outdoors throughout the year, whatever the weather. Adjustable wellies make the wet weather easier if your calves are wider – or indeed narrower – than average, they make a great alternative to short wellington boots.

I’ve put together a selection of the best wellies that offer adjustable fitting around the calf ideal if you are looking for a wide fit. This may be due to stretch neoprene or adjustable side or back gussets.

Best value wide wellies: Solognac Women’s 520

Warmest wellies for wide calves: Muck Boot Chore Adjustable

Le Chameau Chasseur Leather Lined Adjustable Boots

Fit: Ladies’ or men’s
Colours: Iconic green
Sizes: UK 2½–8, with four width options (ladies’), UK 6–15, with eight width options (men’s)

Reasons to buy

  • Four width options
  • Anti-fatigue arch support
  • Two-year warranty

Reasons to avoid

  • Higher price tag but are worth the investment

If you’ve got wide calves but want a seriously good wellington boot, these are your best bet. Le Chameau are at the top end of the market; and the most expensive pair of wellies suitable for wide calves in this guide. They have a full-length waterproof zip that makes them easy to get on and off, plus an adjustable strap for fastening.

They have reinforced fronts for extra protection against abrasion, a leather lining with leather insole and shock-absorbing, insulating, all-terrain outsole sole with reinforced shank for better arch support. Take it from us, they’re a seriously technical boot.

They have many similar features to the Le Chameau Vierzonord, which is also adjustable but doesn’t offer different widths from the outset. I’ve tested these boots with a neoprene lining. Read the full Le Chameau Chasseur Neoprene-lined review – we awarded it H&H Approved status.

Solognac Women’s 520 Durable Rubber Boots

Fit: Ladies’
Colours: Brown
Sizes: UK 3–7

Reasons to buy

  • Affordable
  • Ergonomic design

Reasons to avoid

  • Might not offer enough adjustment for some

A reasonably priced pair of wellies for less than £70 with an adjustable calf. These wellies have been developed by ladies from all over the country. The ergonomic design is specially suited to the shape of a female calf, ankle and instep to offer comfort on all types of terrain. The side adjustable gusset is perfect for getting the right fit for you.

Muck Boot Women’s Chore Adjustable Tall Boots

Fit: Ladies’
Colours: Black
Sizes: UK 3–9
H&H Rating: 9/10, H&H Approved

Reasons to buy

  • Stretchy neoprene cuff
  • Very insulated
  • Rear adjustable gusset extends up to 7cm

Reasons to avoid

  • May be too warm for some

These wellies are the redesigned iconic Muck Boot Chore for women, with the addition of a fully waterproof adjustable gusset at the back that extends up to 7cm for extra room around the calf and a customised fit. The 5mm neoprene adds warmth, comfort and flexibility to the fit. They also feature a breathable mesh lining to help keep you cool on warmer days.

My calves measure 38cm at the widest part and I struggle to find wellies to fit when they have no adjustable gusset on the leg. I tested these wellies and found them to provide grip in all terrains. My feet stayed warm even with normal socks when the temperature dropped due to the 5mm neoprene; the adjustable back gusset allowed for a better fit around my legs even when wearing waterproof layers. If you feel the cold and need sturdy boots these would be a great choice.

How to choose the best wellies for wide calves

One of the first things you need to consider if you want your wellies to last is the sole. So look out for designs with good grip, shock-absorbing soles and moulded footbeds. Like standard wellies, the best wellies for wide calves should be waterproof, warm, supportive and moisture wicking and they’ll usually have some sort of adjustable feature. This is a very important feature when looking to accommodate wide calves as you want the wellies to fit comfortably around your leg.

Be sure that they have a gusset that changes the shape, rather than just a buckle, which is often just for style. The method of adjustment should be secure and easy to use – there’s nothing more annoying than setting your boots to the perfect snug width, to find that the clip comes loose soon after and your boots are gaping. Most adjustable wellies have the gusset on the side, but a few have it at the rear. We have featured both types of adjustment in this guide – wherever it is, make sure it’s within easy reach for adjustment.

The next thing you can check is the material. Most of the wellies in this list are made of natural rubber, which is waterproof, flexible and comfortable, while a large number of styles benefit from highly insulating neoprene linings. Avoid cheap wellies made of PVC plastic.

If you’re buying online, check the sizing guide before you buy. Most companies will also list the maximum calf measurement. The best way for you to measure is to sit on a chair with your knee at 90° and foot flat on the floor. Measure the widest point of your calf and add on a couple of centimetres to account for some long socks.

Why do you need adjustable wellies?

Wide wellies have been designed for men and women with wider calves or for those who are looking for a bit more room so they can wear jeans, trousers or thick socks comfortably.
