President Mutharika Delivers 2026 SONA, Unveils Economic Recovery Agenda
President Arthur Peter Mutharika has delivered his State of the Nation Address (SONA) at the Parliament Building in Lilongwe, marking the official opening of the 2026/2027 Budget Meeting.
Titled “The Path to Economic Recovery: Delivering a People-Centred
Development,” the address outlined the government’s strategy to stabilise the economy.
The President reported that inflation, which stood at 28.7% in September 2025, is projected to fall below 21% in 2026, while economic growth is expected to rise from 2.7% to 3.8% next year.
He cited stabilising maize prices, restoring fuel supplies and austerity measures in public spending as early signs of recovery.
The government also outlined major investments in road rehabilitation, energy generation expansion to over 1,000 megawatts by 2030, fuel storage expansion and mining sector reforms, including plans for a Sovereign Wealth Fund.
In social sectors, the President announced youth and women empowerment loans of K100 million per constituency annually, grants for persons with disabilities, and measures to strengthen community colleges and skills development.
Concluding his address, Mutharika reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to digital transformation, good governance and the fight against corruption, warning that there would be “no sacred cows.”
He called on all three arms of Government to act patriotically and support the national recovery agenda as Malawi embarks on the 2026/2027 fiscal year.
Meanwhile, Parliament has adjourned until Monday when Members of Parliament will start deliberating on the SONA.
