Why We Love This Deal

Now is a great time to buy Fjallraven gear. Not only has the brand launched an extremely rare sale on its own site—something that only happens a couple of times a year—but REI has also slashed prices on the Swedish brand's cold-weather apparel. Interestingly, we're not seeing any styles from the Expedition series at Fjallraven, but REI is loaded with deals on these warm down jackets.

The Fjallraven Expedition Pack Down Hoodie, for example, is on sale for $250, a rare 25% discount from its normal price of $335, and the best price we've seen since before the holidays. This insulated jacket is available at that price across four colorways with plenty of sizes in stock, but you’ll have to act fast if you want to take advantage of this deal—it's unclear when prices go back up.

What Shoppers Should Know

  • Colorways Available: 5
  • Sizes Available: S-2XL
  • Shell: 100% recycled nylon
  • Lining: 100% recycled nylon
  • Insulation: 700-fill-power down, 100% recycled polyester
  • Best For: Active wear in cold, wintry conditions

The Expedition Pack Down Hoodie is made from a 100% recycled nylon shell and liner, a more sustainable choice than virgin nylon. It has a really unique blend of insulation to keep you warm even when you’re working hard. The main body of the jacket is stuffed with 700-fill-power down, which offers reliable warmth with less weight, but the shoulders are stuffed with synthetic insulation. The synthetic fill continues to trap heat even when damp and compressed, so you’ll stay warm even when you’re carrying a pack and the shoulder straps are pressing down on the jacket.

There's an insulated hood that is cinchable at the front and back, which allows you to snug it down tightly over your head or a helmet to lock in the warmth. This works alongside the elastic cuffs and the drawcord hem that also help you keep drafts out.

As for fit, the jacket is relatively trim, so there’s no excess bulk. Finally, two exterior zippered pockets and an internal zippered pocket provide helpful storage, and the jacket is designed to pack down into one of the pockets for easy storage.

With its high-performance insulation and attached head, this jacket is a great choice for dealing with cold, windy weather. Note, though, that the attached hood makes it less suitable for layering under a shell, as the hood can make it difficult to get a clean fit (for easier layering, opt for a hoodless jacket like the X-Latt). The lack of waterproofing also makes this jacket a less suitable choice for truly wet conditions, though it should hold up fine in light snow.

What Shoppers Are Saying

The Expedition Pack Down Hoodie is a top-rated jacket at REI, and shoppers say it’s “incredibly warm” with a “soft and comfortable” feel. Multiple reviewers praised the fit—it offers generous coverage to keep you protected from cold winds, but it’s not overly baggy.

In addition, the cinchable hem and hood really help you block out drafts. And, despite this, it still offers great freedom of movement for hikes and other outdoor activities. Multiple shoppers said it compares favorably to similar insulated layers from Patagonia and other brands: One went as far as saying the Pack Down Hoodie is “better than any other major brand.”

This 25% discount on the Fjallraven Expedition Pack Down Hoodie may expire at some point soon, but if we know one thing about Fjallraven deals, it's that sizes rarely stick around long enough to see that happen. Lay claim to your jacket today before the $80-plus discount is gone.
