Our Favourite Ever Liverpool FC Player Songs

When it comes to Liverpool Football Club, many of the players have been immortalised not only through their actions on the pitch, but also in the songs that the Kop sings about them.

There have been numerous much-loved players who have seen their name sung loud and proud by those inside Anfield, where the Scouse wit of those creating the songs ensures that they’re not just a chance to get behind the players but also add some personality to the songs that reflect the players themselves; or at least the Kop’s understanding of them.

Obviously, there are too many songs to mention all of them, but here is a look at what we think are ten of the best:

Luis Suárez

There aren’t many players as divisive as Luis Suárez, who was absolutely adored by Liverpool supporters to the extent that many continued to support him even after he’d been accused of racially abusing Patrice Evra. His skill with a football at his feet was undeniable, even if his inability to control his emotions led to him biting opposition players on several occasions during his career.

The song that the Kop used to belt out for him was an undeniable banger, being sung to the tune of Just Can’t Get Enough by Depeche Mode. Unlike some other songs I’ll mention, it doesn’t get an outing during matches when the Reds are comfortable, which is doubtless tied to his behaviour in the past. Here are the lyrics:

His name is Luis Suárez, he wears the famous Red;

Luis García

Another player named Luis who remains much-loved by Liverpool supporters is Luis García, with the song often being trotted out in games that either don’t mean anything or that the Reds are winning so comfortably that the Kop can have some fun and bring out a few of the old numbers.

We filled the bar with the Luis Garcia song, then Virgil’s song and Mo loaded up the shot right as we ended the last verse of “Virgil Van Dijk!”

The diminutive Spaniard is one of several players to have a song sung to the tune of the American standard You Are My Sunshine, with the words reflecting both where he’s from and how much he was loved by the supporters during his time at the club. Here is how it goes:

Luis Garcia,

He drinks Sangria,

He came from Barca

To Liverpool.

He’s 5 foot 7,

He’s football heaven,

So please don’t take our Luis away!

Steven Gerrard

For modern supporters of Liverpool, there are few players that stride the history of the club like a colossus in the same way that Steven Gerrard does. Although his reputation was somewhat tarnished in the eyes of many by heading firstly to Rangers and then to Saudi Arabia, he remains one of the best ever.

When it comes to the song that supporters created for him, it was sung to the tune of Que Sera Sera, the song made famous by Doris Day, and took into account both his ability to ping passes all around the pitch as well as his general ability to fend for himself. This is what the Kop would sing:

He’ll pass the ball 40 yards,

He’s big and he’s f**king hard:

Virgil van Dijk

There aren’t many captains of Liverpool who have been able to lift the Premier League trophy in front of supporters, but Virgil van Dijk is one of them. That his debut goal for the Reds came in a game against Everton certainly helped to cement his place in the pantheon of top-class players.

Add into that the fact that he was one of the best defenders in the world for a long time and it is easy to understand why he was so beloved by supporters up and down the land. The song for him accounts for the fact that he can both defend well and score goals, sung as it is to the tune of Dirty Old Town:

Fernando Torres

Although Fernando Torres’ time at Liverpool came to a bitter end when he left for Chelsea, the passage of time has allowed most supporters to acknowledge the fact that the club was in an absolute state at the time and that maybe his decision to depart was understandable, even if hated when it happened.

There is no question that the song that was sung for Torres by those inside Anfield was one of the best atmosphere creators ever, thanks to the ‘Torres Bounce’ that accompanied the singing of it. Before he arrived at Liverpool, he had an armband that gets referenced in the song, which goes like this to the tune of an American Civil War song:

His Armband proved he was a red,

Torres! Torres!

You’ll Never Walk Alone it said,

Torres! Torres!

We bought the lad from sunny Spain,

He gets the ball, he scores again,

Fernando Torres!

Liverpool’s number 9!

Jamie Carragher

As with Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher was the Scouse heartbeat of Liverpool throughout the 2000s and into the 2010s, having first broken into the side during the 1990s. Although never captain in his own right, Carra, as he is affectionately known, was leader in all but armband when on the pitch.

Although his post-Liverpool career with Sky Sports has had its moments of controversy and I have no time for him commentating on our matches personally, he remains beloved by most and so it is only right that he had a song sung to the tune of a Beatles number in the form of Yellow Submarine. These were the lyrics:

John Arne Riise

There aren’t many players that have played for Liverpool over the years that have a song that can probably be considered better than the player themselves, but that was almost certainly the case with John Arne Riise. The ginger left-back wasn’t everyone’s favourite performer, but his song definitely was.

I love John Arne Riise and I loved his goal v Utd. But maybe we now have a chance to modernise his song.

Such is the extent that it was a bit of a banger than it continues to be brought out on occasion, in spite of the fact that the player wasn’t exactly loved by all. That being said, his goal against Manchester United that formed the backbone of the lyrics was an absolute screamer. Here’s what gets sung:

Lucas Leiva

There are some players who tend to split the opinion of the fanbase, with Lucas Leiva definitely in that category at the time. Although most people will say that they love him now, there was absolutely a split on the Kop when it came to the Brazilian during the Rafa Benítez era in the Anfield dugout.

He was certainly loved more towards the end of his time on Merseyside, which is part of the reason why the Kop gave him such a brilliant song. As with the likes of the Torres one, it offered an opportunity to engage the body as well as the voice, bringing atmosphere to matches when it was sung to the tune of Baby Give it Up by KC and the Sunshine Band:

Sadio Mané

One of the most exciting players ever to pull on the famous Red jersey, Sadio Mané got people off their seats by being thrilling to watch. Having arrived at Anfield as a right-winger, he was moved to the left to accommodate Mo Salah, then put in the middle for a time, thriving in all three positions.

His song was based on the tune of Voulez-Vous by ABBA, which was itself a surprise in many ways. It became really popular during the 2018-2019 season, as the Senegalese forward helped us win our sixth European Cup in Madrid. Here are the lyrics that would be belted out by all:

Mo Salah

Last on the list but most definitely not least is Mo Salah’s song, which was one of several that the Egyptian King had sung in his honour by the Kop. Arguably the best player Liverpool had during the Premier League era, Salah’s song was all but guaranteed to lift the atmosphere when supporters belted it out.

Sung to the lyrics of Sit Down by James, that is a tune that features other lyrics that Liverpool fans could well understand, which are “If I hadn’t seen such riches, I could live with being poor.” Here are the words to the Salah song, which will doubtless be sung by the Kop forever more when the mood is right:
