Day 6: What Team Canada did at Milano Cortina 2026

It was Team Canada’s first multi-medal day at Milano Cortina 2026. 

Good friends Mikaël Kingsbury and Eliot Grondin both won silver in their respective events and Courtney Sarault put Canada’s second short track speed skating medal on the board. 

Here’s a look at the news of the day. 

Freestyle Skiing

Mikaël Kingsbury captured the silver medal in the men’s moguls event, earning the fourth Olympic medal of his career in the process.

His score of 83.71 in the super final tied Cooper Woods’ mark, but the Australian was awarded gold due to a higher score for turns, which served as the tiebreaker to separate the two competitors.

Julien Viel finished sixth in the super final with a score of 79.78 points. After competing in the second qualification round, Elliot Vaillancourt made it to the first final round, finishing 14th with 76.85 points. Viel and Vaillancourt were both making their Olympic debuts.

Snowboard

In men’s snowboard cross, Eliot Grondin won the silver medal in a dramatic final in which all four competitors traded positions.

Leading the race in the final turn, Grondin saw Austria’s Alessandro Haemmerle edge him out at the finish line by just three one hundredths of a second. It is Grondin’s second straight Olympic silver medal in the event.

Liam Moffatt and Evan Bichon, meanwhile, saw their runs end in the ⅛ finals. Bichon ended up in 17th place overall, while Moffatt placed 28th. 

In women’s halfpipe, Elizabeth Hosking was the lone Canadian in the final. She finished 11th after being unable to land her final trick on each of her three runs.

Short Track Speed Skating

Courtney Sarault managed to capture the bronze medal in the women’s 500m by passing the Netherlands’ Selma Poutsma in the final turn of the last lap.

Kim Boutin finished fifth in the A final while Florence Brunelle won the B Final to place sixth overall. 

On the men’s side, William Dandjinou and Félix Roussel had to settle for fourth and tenth place respectively in the 1000m. Dandjinou had been executing well in the A Final until a slight slip in the last lap.

Hockey 

Both national teams won their games today by identical 5-0 scores.

On the men’s side, Canada defeated Czechia in a match that marked the return of Canadian NHL players to the Olympic Winter Games.

Macklin Celebrini, Mark Stone, Bo Horvat, Nathan MacKinnon and Nick Suzuki scored for Team Canada while Jordan Binnington made 26 saves for the shutout. Connor McDavid also had a strong night with three assists.

On the women’s side, Team Canada came out on top in their postponed matchup against Finland.

Emily Clark stood out by scoring two goals in the game and Ann-Renee Desbiens stopped all 14 shots directed her way.

This win confirmed Canada’s second-place position in Group A. Troy Ryan’s squad will face Germany in the quarterfinals this Saturday.

Curling

Team Canada opened the women’s Olympic tournament with a big 10-4 win over Denmark, a game that ended in handshakes after the seventh end.

Cross-Country Skiing

At just 20 years old, Alison Mackie achieved Canada’s best ever Olympic result in a women’s 10km freestyle event. She finished the interval start race in 24:07.1, good for eighth place.

Liliane Gagnon finished 17th in 24:37.6, Sonjaa Schmidt was 34th in 25:22.2, and Katherine Stewart-Jones placed 47th in 26:01.7. 

Speed Skating – Long Track 

Isabelle Weidemann just couldn’t quite find the gear she needed to get on the podium in the women’s 5000m. She finished fifth in 6:50.08, 3.74 back of the bronze medal.

Laura Hall was the other Canadian in the event. She finished ninth in 7:02.90. 

Skeleton

Josip Brusic made his Olympic debut with the first two runs of men’s skeleton taking place. The 23-year-old is in 24th place with a total time of 1:56.54. 

Alpine Skiing

It was a tough day on the slopes in the women’s super-G. Neither Valérie Grenier nor Cassidy Gray were able to finish their runs.
