The 85-year-old Puerto Rico-born matriarch opened the space in the ’70s, and it has become one of the last remaining Latino social clubs in New York City.
Known for her sparkling rings, Toñita is a local celebrity thanks to her long-running social club, which is still full of affordable drinks, domino games and salsa nights, and has been a cultural home base for generations of Puerto Ricans and other Latinos in NYC.
She owns the building, and famously has refused to sell despite neighborhood gentrification efforts.
Bad Bunny has been a regular for years, celebrating album releases there, and even referencing the club on “NuevaYol,” one of the songs he performed during his set. During the Super Bowl, he recreated the club and brought her out to serve him a shot as one of the many meaningful displays of his culture.
Thank you @badbunnypr for the invitation, we had a great time. Thank God we got to see you and spend time with you. God bless you and may you continue to succeed until the very end! – Toñita,”she sweetly captioned a post after the show on her social media.
