EA cancels Junior High Diving Championships in Budapest due to low numbers while anticipating “stronger” relaunch
European Aquatics has cancelled the European Junior High Diving Championships 2026 scheduled for Budapest from June 17 to 18.
The decision was taken to minimise potential financial risks to the host given a level of likely participation that has been “lower than anticipated”.
In a letter to national federations, EA adds that cancelling the event at this stage will allow time for it to be relaunched “under stronger and more sustainable conditions.”
The letter reads:
“We would like to inform you that the level of interest expressed by federations for participation in this event has been lower than anticipated.
“As this Championship was conceived to strengthen the junior development pathway, it is essential that its launch reflects meaningful engagement and competitive value.
“In addition, we believe it is important to act responsibly toward our designated hosts by minimising potential financial risks associated with organizing an event with limited participation.
“We must also remain mindful of the crowded global competition calendar and avoid staging events that may have limited sporting impact.
“While this was not an easy decision, we are confident that cancelling the event will allow us to reassess, consult further with our members and potential hosts, and relaunch the championship under stronger and more sustainable conditions.
“European Aquatics remains fully committed to the promotion and development of high diving across all age groups.
“We look forward to an exciting edition of the senior High Diving Championships this summer, where athletes will compete in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower as part of the European Aquatics Championships Paris 2026 – a spectacular setting that will showcase our sport at the highest level.
“We sincerely thank you for your understanding and continued cooperation. Further updates regarding future planning will be communicated in due course.”
