Major blow for INEOS: Top managerial target set to sign new deal
Manchester United have suffered the first major setback to their summer plans.
The Red Devils sacked Ruben Amorim earlier this season, handing the reins to club legend Michael Carrick on an interim basis until the end of the campaign.
Behind the scenes, INEOS have been planning to assess the managerial market after the upcoming World Cup, hoping to take advantage of several high-profile coaches expected to become available.
Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti are on that shortlist.
According to The Times, Tuchel is expected to sign a new deal to stay on as the England head coach until 2028.
His current deal was set to expire after the World Cup, but he seems tempted by the opportunity of a “home” European Championship finals in 2028.
The former Chelsea manager was one of the top names to become the United head coach, considering he was interviewed by the club before they hired Amorim.
Ultimately, INEOS opted against handing Tuchel the job, largely due to his desire for greater control over football operations at Old Trafford.
That decision has since come back to haunt the hierarchy, with Amorim’s appointment now widely viewed as a costly misstep.
In the short term, Carrick has been deployed as a familiar and nostalgic figure to steady the ship and reconnect with supporters.
The United owners seem unsure of what the future holds, a worrying sign for the club faithful.
Ancelotti, Luis Enrique, Eddie Howe and Marco Silva are other head coaches who are linked to taking the vacant job at the Theatre of Dreams.
