Ange Postecoglou reveals ‘bizarre’ thing Daniel Levy told him before iconic Tottenham moment
In the wake of Thomas Frank’s dismissal at Tottenham, Ange Postecoglou has been speaking openly about what happened to him at the club.
Spurs finally put Thomas Frank out of his misery on Wednesday morning after yet another defeat pushed the Lilywhites closer to the relegation battle.
Unbelievably, just as Frank was sacked by Tottenham, former manager Ange Postecoglou was in the studio with Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher and co. to record an episode of the Stick to Football podcast.
Naturally, he had a lot to say about Spurs, and there have been some eye-opening revelations about Daniel Levy in particular.
Ange Postecoglou was reminded of Tottenham’s trophy curse
On the show, Carragher asked Postecoglou if he felt there was a lack of belief at Spurs when it comes to winning trophies.
He said: “100% there is, absolutely and that was the thing I was trying to break and my whole statement about winning things in the second year, I was doing that for the club because nobody internally would dare say that, they were just scared.
“Having been close a few times, I even remember the day of the Europa final and by that stage, the players were brilliant and I knew we would win that day, I was just convinced.”
Obviously, Postecoglou did break that curse for Tottenham by delivering the Europa League trophy back in May of last year. However, it sounds like Levy didn’t share his belief that the trophy would come home with Spurs.
Postecoglou added: “Everyone in the hotel was just so calm and I remember a few times Daniel [Levy] came in and we had a coffee and he said ‘everyone is really relaxed’ and the only thing he said to me which was bizarre as a motivational point was, he said something like ‘You know what, I’ve been in seven finals or semi-finals and we haven’t won one.’
“I know why he said that, because of that, so that’s what I’m saying. You’ve got that and that does exist and then you break that by winning something and what do you do? You tear it all up, and you go again.
“We had the Super Cup final and I’d back myself to win that, we could have two trophies in the space of two months, then all of a sudden that’s out of the window.”
Sacking Ange Postecoglou was a mistake
As we know, Tottenham sacked Postecoglou just days after his Europa League victory, citing the club’s terrible league form as the reason to part ways.
Now, with everything that has transpired since his departure, and the plethora of issues around Thomas Frank’s time at the club, perhaps letting Postecoglou go was a bigger mistake than anyone realised.
He was outspoken, but he only ever wanted the best for the club and the fans. He also changed the mindset of the club from top to bottom and turned this squad of players into winners.
Postecoglou’s tenure wasn’t perfect, but it was far more entertaining and fulfilling than what we experienced over the last eight months.
