Priyanka Chopra Reveals Concerns She Had When She Married Nick Jonas: 'I Didn’t Know If It Was Even Real'
Priyanka Chopra Jonas didn’t have cold feet when walking down the aisle to marry husband Nick Jonas, but she did start to have some concerns after they tied the knot in 2018. The Citadel star reveals she struggled to believe if their relationship was “real” at first in a Feb. 11 interview with Variety.
Despite her own years of fame — first in India, then in America — Chopra Jonas wasn’t sure what to make of the famous Jonas Brother in the beginning. After all, he was a world-renowned pop star, and they had a whirlwind romance that quickly led to marriage “within six months of meeting.” The Bluff actress opened up about her (valid) worries, and what helped her get past them.
“When I first married him, I didn’t know if it was even real,” she told the outlet. “This part of him. Because I was like, ‘This is crazy. This is put on.’”
It’s not hard to imagine feeling that way! Still, over time, the “Gut Punch” singer proved how much he cared about her. “But Nick has this absolute sincerity,” Chopra Jonas went on. “It inspires me every day in a profession which requires you to pivot and become whatever you need to put on. He’s constantly sincere. His whole day, whatever the conversation is, he is sincere.”
She partially credits this sincerity to his parents. “He started working when he was really young,” Chopra Jonas explained. “His parents are the most wonderful, levelheaded, absolute saints, so I can see where it comes from. But it’s such a disarming quality about him.”
“He doesn’t feel the need to deviate from that sincerity for anything or anyone,” Chopra Jonas, who shares 4-year-old daughter Malti Marie with Jonas, continued. “He is himself and comfortable in it, and I really learned how to be a lot more comfortable in my awkwardness and my insecurities since I got married to him.”
We love that for her! No doubt this solid foundation is what keeps her calm and level-headed when rumors fly about their relationship (as these things always tend to do).
“We’re eight years in,” Chopra Jonas continued. “If people want to keep waiting for it to implode, that’s their choice. I stopped thinking about it. … I don’t know what was it about us that rubbed people the wrong way. I think there was the intercultural nature of it — different countries, different religions, age gap. It was very hurtful. And we both, instead of looking out, just sort of looked at each other, and we were like, ‘It doesn’t matter.’ So it’s like water off a duck’s back now.”
In an interview on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast earlier this month, Jonas detailed how quickly he fell in love with Chopra Jonas. He said, “That night, when I saw her walk in, she was wearing blue jeans, a white top, and like, a black leather jacket. And I just was like, ‘I’m going to marry this woman.’ And I knew it right away.”
Jonas said he told Chopra Jonas he loved her “after the second or third date,” then immediately called his mom and said, “I’m going to marry this woman. I’d love for you to meet her son.” Two-and-a-half months later they were engaged and “three or four months after that” they were married. Obsessed is an understatement!
