Concord man gets 36-plus years for killing man in Antioch
MARTINEZ — A Concord man was sentenced to 36 years and eight months in prison as part of a plea deal that required him to accept a conviction of killing a man in 2023, court records show.
Agustin Calderon, 43, pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter and a gun enhancement in the Dec. 16, 2023 fatal shooting of 29-year-old Eric Azevedo, in Antioch. Calderon was formally sentenced in October and is housed at Pleasant Valley State Prison, records show.
Prosecutors dropped a murder count as part of the plea deal, records show.
The same week he was sentenced, Calderon sued the Contra Costa jail system, alleging that after receiving shoulder, he slipped in the jail shower due to unsafe conditions and re-injured his arm. The suit remains active, court records show.
Azevedo was shot and killed near a tent where he lived by the railroad tracks on the 700 block of West 1st Street in Antioch, police said. At the time of the killing, Calderon was on parole after serving less than half of a sentence for a 2017 conviction of assault with a deadly firearm, court records show.
