James Van Der Beek Dead at 48 After Cancer Battle
James Van Der Beek, the actor known for his role in Dawson's Creek and numerous other television shows, has died at 48. His family confirmed the news with a post on his Instagram account.
Van Der Beek was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2023, and went public with his diagnosis a year later. He opened up about his struggles in various interviews and became an advocate for others battling cancer.
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend," they wrote.
Van Der Beek is survived by his wife, Kimberly Brook, as well as six children.
Family Launches GoFundMe
In the wake of his passing, Van Der Beek's family launched a GoFundMe page in support of his family.
"James Van Der Beek was a beloved husband, father, and friend who touched the lives of everyone around him," the description reads. "After a long and courageous battle with cancer, James passed away on February 11, 2026 leaving behind his devoted wife, Kimberly, and their six wonderful children. Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care."
"In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future," it continued. "The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds. They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead."
The GoFundMe concludes: "Your generosity will help cover essential living expenses, pay bills, and support the children’s education. Every donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives. Thank you for considering a gift to support them."
Van Der Beek Had Decades-Long Hollywood Career
After starting his career in off-Broadway productions in NYC, Van Der Beek got his big break as the titular character in 1997's Dawson's Creek. The series aired for six seasons on WB and also made stars out of Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson and Michelle Williams. During the show's airing, he also landed a starring role in the film Varsity Blues.
He would also nab a recurring role on One Tree Hill, Mercy, Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23 and Friends With Better Lives.
His Public Cancer Battle Inspired
After choosing to go public with his battle with colorectal cancer in 2024, Van Der Beek became a public advocate for those suffering from the disease. Back in December, he called the diagnosis the "best thing that ever happened" to him, hoping it would lead to a healthier lifestyle in the future.
"I went into shock," Van Der Beek said. "But you know, one of the things I was really lucky about was when I heard the news, I was like, ‘This is gonna be the best thing that’s ever happened to me.’"
"I had this little voice in my head that said, ‘You’re gonna make changes in your life that you would never, ever make if you didn’t have this extreme of a diagnosis, and it’s gonna add healthy, happy years to your life.'"
