Malls where you can still find Hot Dog on a Stick in Southern California
Hot Dog on a Stick is getting harder to find in Southern California malls.
The Carlsbad-based counter-service chain has closed several locations, its parent company Fat Brands confirmed in an email.
Fat Brand hasn’t yet provided details on what locations have closed or when, but said the closures were due to unfavorable leases and that the chain still has nearly 40 locations.
Fat Brands filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Jan. 26 in Texas.
The parent company of Fatburger, it owns 18 brands with more than 2,200 units worldwide, according to a recent news release. Prominent brands in Southern California include Round Table Pizza, Johnny Rockets and Fazoli’s.
Social media users have been wondering if Hot Dog on a Stick has a future after an Instagram video was posted on Feb. 1 by What’s Up with Riverside’s Instagram channel. It shows Hot Dog on a Stick after closing down for good in the food court of the Galleria at Tyler.
The video got 42,100 likes and more than 2,250 comments.
Can you still even call it a mall legally without a Hot Dog on a Stick, one commenter asked.
Hot Dog on a Stick was founded 80 years ago. Its first stand opened in 1946 near the Santa Monica Pier. That location was rebuilt and restored to its original appearance in a yearslong project that was completed in 2023. The first mall location opened in 1973 in Murray, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City, according to newspaper reports.
The brand is known for its corn dogs and “hand-stomped” lemonade made with T-shaped tools used to crush the citrus fruit in large tubs. And then there’s the uniforms with the high red, white, blue and yellow hats.
With the Tyler mall location closed, Riverside County has one Hot Dog on a Stick left. San Bernardino County has three and Los Angeles County has seven, according to the list of locations on the chain’s website.
